Re: Review: Maximo Gomes Tallow Shaving Soap, by First Canadian Shave

Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, the longevity of these soft soaps isn't great; I've made a big dent in the tubs and have done only about 20 shaves with them. Still, the aroma will be enough to convince me to buy more when it runs out.

At about 10:22, Billy says, "You don't need expensive shavin' soap."

True, but I have it anyway.

Great video, Chris - thanks for finding and sharing!

Review: Maximo Gomes Tallow Shaving Soap, by First Canadian Shave

When I first opened my tub of Maximo Gomez Tallow Shaving Soap[1] I was reminded of wet cedar lumber combined with tobacco; my wife correctly opined that it smelled like walking into a humidor. Either way, it has a wonderful masculine scent. The Web page indicates that it, “…contains oils of zesty c...

Re: Face lathering and brush loading (soap)

... The brush that gives me the best results of all of my brushes for on-cake lathering is the humble Semogue 1305. This brush and the 830 have a special grade of boar, superior to and unlike any other in my experience. I have the exact same experieince with my very old, cracked and chipped 1305. I...

Review: Barber Shop Tallow Shaving Soap, made by First Canadian Shave

maximo_gomez.jpg I’ve been using Barber Shop Tallow Shaving Soap[1] exclusively for nearly two weeks now. As you can see in the picture it comes in a 4cm tall x 9.75 cm diameter tub, which is about twice the size required to accommodate its 4-ounce contents. When opening the tub, I immediately pick...

Basil, thanks for the recommendation. If I didn't already have three different soaps en route I'd consider picking some up!

No, but it does sound intriguing. Just what I need: yet another soap to add to my growing collection.

D.R. Harris Rose shaving cream, for only the second time, ever.

The scent! The lather! Oh, my. So intoxicating.

I definitely have to get the 'Pink' aftershave milk.

What a sad picture that is. Much like seeing the bottom of my glass of Scotch.

Re: SOTD: Cycling through my sample pack of blades

May 15 - 16

The Feather blades give me a pretty good shave, but at the cost of some irritation (very much like the Kais in that respect). I can use them, but they're not my first choice.

Re: How did you discover wetshaving?

I used an electric razor for years - probably until I was in my late 20s - until I got tired of having that buzzing contraption heating up my face and neck every morning. For the next thirty-odd years I went through the cycle of two-, three-, four-, and finally FIVE-bladed cartridge razors, but afte...

May 13 - 14: Feather blades I've confirmed my earlier suspicion that the blades' reputation for sharpness have made me really concentrate on my technique, which is always a good thing. Like the Kais, I get great shaves but I pay for it with redness and irritation. However, the shaves are so good tha...

Re: SOTD: Cycling through my sample pack of blades

May 9 - 12 The Kai blades are sharp... perhaps too sharp for my tender hide. I get really good shaves from them, but at the cost of redness and irritation on my neck. One thing is for sure, though: the fearsome reputation of the Kai and Feather blades has really made me concentrate on my technique! ...

Re: SOTD: Cycling through my sample pack of blades

May 5 - 8 I give the Rapira Swedish Super Steel blades a mixed review; note that as with all the other blade reviews, I used the same blade for four consecutive days: 1st shave: Meh. The blade seemed to pull a bit, yet I did wind up with a decent shave with some irritation, but not a lot. Some lefto...

Re: SOTD: Cycling through my sample pack of blades

May 1 - 4 I've been using the Wilkinson Sword blades for the last four days (the ones made in Germany). Just. Wow. I've been getting really close shaves with virtually no irritation, and the only blood loss was due to my mediocre - but improving - technique. I've been rotating through my soaps as we...

Re: The state of the current English Shaving soaps

I've been kicking around the idea of adding a drop or two of essential oil to the bowl before I lather. I have lemon on hand (I'm making my own pre-shave oil) but I'd also like to locate some sandalwood. That might just be the ticket to add a little variety to the MWF.

Re: The state of the current English Shaving soaps

Have you thought about Mitchell's Wool Fat? I've been using it for about a week and a half and I heartily recommend it. Some have complained that it's difficult to lather, but that hasn't been my experience, even with the very hard water in my town (12.6 gpg). To me it has a subtle scent, produces &...

Apr 27 - 30 I've been looking forward to using the Voskhod blades for quite some time, and they did not disappoint. The first shave was so buttery smooth that I had to check and see if I'd forgotten to load a blade into my Merkur 38C! Wow. The three subsequent shaves were excellent. The Voskhod, GSB...

Re: SOTD: Cycling through my sample pack of blades

Apr 23 - 26 I've used the same Gillette Silver Blue blade for the last four days. Here are my notes: 1st shave, wow! 2nd, a bit harsh. 3rd, SIMPLY AMAZING! 4th, excellent shave. The GSBs have given me three of the best shaves ever, and one of them was so good that I had to restrain myself from bragg...
