Side note: sandalwood smells rather like testosterone which may be significant. And vanillin smells rather like one’s mama’s —well, anyone’s mama’s, really — nourishing breast.
Smutty piece of work, nature. One track mind.

Re: Is SMF losing its vigour?
I don’t post much but I do drop by from time to time to see what Sam is currently worrying about which one he should buy... was I dreaming or was it recently frying-pans? The man is an inspiration to us all.

Sounds great fun. I'm jealous. My ambition is to play the organ for a Lakers game. The greatest team of any sport ever, anywhere. Even though the conversation among fans is not whether they'll win, but how much they will lose by...

I love Yatagan though haven't tried the current one. But it's definitely not to everyone's taste. My ma, a lifelong Caron gal, took against it when I wore it to take her out to lunch. "You've trodden in something, laddie" she said amiably. Philistine. French blood. And Welsh blood. And Jew...

Re: Worst scent ever
The *original* pain thinner was excellent but the current iteration lacks depth and body. Same with gasoline, which used to have a very long-lasting lead note but no longer. Shame. EDIT "Paint" thinner of course, tho' "pain thinner" would be handy. Halothane™ would fit the bill, ...

Re: Alcohol based aftershave
The Trumper ones are all alcohol-based. The aftershaves are the same as the eaux de toilettes but with added water, but you say you have some system of -- pipes? In the walls? Isn't that asking for trouble? -- so just add water. Like it used to tell you to do on the old Old Spice bottles.

Damn it.

I never noticed that but my mind's nose says you're absolutely right. Tho' the old Hammam Bouquet Extract had a strange balsamic dryout which the new entirely lacks, and the Bulgarian Rose otto was astounding. Joy was more like Rose de Mai, came singing out of the bottle. They were two greats but Jo...

Lilac Vegetal. Yes. Gawd blimey. Used to be really rather good - a classic French barbershop lilac. Couple of the old Frogs in my lineage used it. They smelt fine. Then they changed ALL the ingredients but still called it Lilac Vegetal. Odd. The urinal cake thing is dead right, except it's not a fre...

Re: Can I get your thoughts?
Ultra-modern, clean, probably spot-on for the young, thrusting, status-conscious Taiwan/HK entrepreneur. Too hygienic for the thirtysomething Frenchman, too much iris for Germans, too urban for Austrians. I imagine it plays well in Luxembourg. Spiky iris with an odd metallic dryout, a bit like sniff...

Sam is trying to talk himself into, or out of, something. Presently it will become clear what that something is.Rufus wrote: . I don't get it.

1 part Sacred Gin, 2 parts Fever Tree tonic, 2 ice cubes and a twist of bergamot.
Failing that, whatever's on offer. Mountain Dew and own-brand bathtub gin, if need be.

DAMN fine collection, Sam. The Honey & Flowers fills me with jealousy. But I have a big bottle of 1975 Hammam and another of the Hammam Bouquet Extract, so we are probably quits. What's the Fragonard Jasmin like?

Re: Has Anyone Elst Tried HABIT ROUGE By Guerlain
First one I fell in love with when I was 15 or so. Still wear it today (though it's been through loads of different iterations since then). It used to come in a curvy little red ceramic flask, along with "sapoceti", a perfumed soap which was the best I ever used. It's a wonderful classic c...

I would have given up 25 years of editing crapola , and I mean that in the nicest sense of the word, to have been your editor for one book, one page, a sentence . . . I take that very kindly, Ron, though of course I might equally well think "The unutterable blackguard wants to INTERFERE with m...

Re: Eau Sauvage EDT vs EDP
The Eau de Parfum, to my nose, is quite remarkably pointless and I can't imagine what they were thinking or who they were thinking of. The Far Eastern market, I suspect, which doesn't like anything remotely sensual -- "clean" and "fresh" are the key words. The Eau de Toilette isn...

Thank you for the well wishes. I know I am going to get the Maison Frances Kurkdjian Lumiere Noir pour Homme - a rose scent. Bravo. The Cologne pour le Soir is a bit of a fence-sitter - like the Absolue pour le Soir but it hasn't loosened its tie and kissed the girl yet. Someone said "If that'...

Re: Penhaligon's Bayolea
I have an old bottle of the original Bayolea with barely any left in it. The label says it's an "elegant adaptation of the Penhaligon Bay Rhum as a Tonic Wash and Dressing for the Hair". In practice, it was a perfectly pleasant bay rum with some oil in it. (Hence the name. Pronounced, inci...
