Maybe this experience with this soap is an example of the effectiveness of customer complaints being persuasive when a company prematurely releases a product that is obviously defective.
Gary, I think you hit the nail on the head.

Re: Gokumyo 20k

A few years back I bought two new razors at the same time, a Dovo and a TI. Neither was shave ready sharp, as I perceived and expected. I soon got rid of these disappointments. Looking back over the years, I think they were probably ready in the context of straight razor shaves, while I was expecti...

Re: Musgo Real soap

Tim, thanks for the review. I have always loved Musgo Real's scent but the cream would irritate me if I used it more than a shave or two. I still use those very old tubes now and then for a shave and it does smell wonderful. I even have a few tubes of the oldest formulation and they are wonderful sm...

Re: Starting over with an open blade

Tim, excellent report on the touch-up. A long ways down the road when you've mastered it all you can keep a blade going forever with a good touch-up routine.

The hones can be used to fix a damaged edge or for experimentation.

Re: Gokumyo 20k

Personally, I never use mine anymore. The reason is due to rounding of the edge from stropping. I may be mis-remembering but I think all edges wind up rounded to a degree from stropping etc. I seem to recall this from the Science of Sharp blog but I may be wrong. My thoughts are if the blade winds u...

Re: Starting over with an open blade

I've come back to the one pass shave recently like the good Doctor. I'm pleased with it and have gotten so good at it that it's nearly as close as a two pass.

As I age my skin has gotten more sensitive and the one pass is doing me fine for now.

You gotta do what you gotta do.

Homemade Vinaigrette

One thing I enjoy immensely is a homemade vinaigrette. I've been using the following for years: 1 clove or so of garlic minced pinch of salt 1 1/2 tblspns white wine vinegar 1/2 tsp or so of dijon mustard 1/3 or so of extra virgin olive oil Recently I've swapped out the garlic and white wine vinegar...

Re: Starting over with an open blade

Congratulations on the job! I share your joy as I just landed a new assignment myself on Thursday. I start Tuesday next week. I am very interested to hear of your progress with the straight. It seems you have it mapped out before you begin the new role. It seems like you have a "no alternative" plan...

Re: Ern 1166

Neat blade but looks like a full hollow to me. I expect the metal to be meatier in the middle were it not but would have to put my hands on it to really confirm.

Either way, use it in good health. Every Ern I've honed for customers has taken a great edge. Hope you're does too.

Truth is stranger than fiction.

Jim, good to see you again.

Doing good here. Still using my most favored setup most the time.

It maybe quieter here than on other forums but we provide value like no other.

Re: Starting over with an open blade

Tim, if you get a good wedge then it will be excellent IMHO. Hope you do so. I believe the good Doctor has mentioned a few times that TI's perform like wedges because they are so stiff even if they are full hollows. I think this is why I prefer TI's. My TI's are all old forges though, supposedly fro...

Re: Starting over with an open blade

Tim, sounds like a good setup. A wedge and a Genco are excellent (given the wedge is of good steel, and I've honed many of them that were not so beware). Every Genco I've honed for customers honed up excellently so hopefully your's will as well. I know you have the strop coming so get familiar with ...

Re: Fountain Pens

I am officially done collecting fountain pens now that I have found my holy grail. My grandfather carried a tan colored Parker 51 on 27 missions in a B-29 bomber in WWII. He carried it until he died, and I have it safely stored away because I am afraid of losing it. Well, I found the same pen, neve...

Re: Fountain Pens

Wendell, good on you and I am happy that you have found joy in this. I am glad that you have found a way to use them successfully as a lefty. I have loved fountain pens since my days in High School. I went to a private Catholic Prep School for boys and got my first fountain pen from the trunk of a d...
