Re: Williams Mug Shaving Soap is still horrible

What I thought was really confusing is the gunk that built up on the edge. There's no mineral oil or the like mentioned in the ingredients so far as I can ascertain. The only other cake I had this issue with was the Culmak (recently tried after many years languishing). But it's got Paraffinum liquid...

Williams Mug Shaving Soap is still horrible

Picked up a cake of Williams shaving soap for 99 cents today just to test some claims made elsewhere that it really does perform very well (hence it might be implying a change in formulation, or getting the current formulation right as the ingredients list suggest it should be a good performer). Nah...

Re: Checking out some Taylor's soap and creams

As a distant reference point: Yesterday I shaved with Taylor's Sandalwood cream. It's got to be at least fifteen years old. The cream was mostly gone maybe an eighth of a tub left. It was somewhat dried out but it gave an exceptional shave and the scent was wonderful and very intoxicating. Since it ...

Clive, yes, a beautiful time. I love Spring except for the bugs, they can go to hell for all I care.

Looks like a bottle that one might expect from the 70's.

Classic was out in those days but who knows.

Dr. Moss, I'm sorry you didn't find them as pleasurable as you had hoped. You know where you can send them if you ever tire of them.

Re: Advice for starting a new cake of vintage soap

Tim, I'm interested to learn of how you fair. One caveat to what I posted that I've observed is the old vintage Yardley soap. I've never experienced this issue with them, no matter how old as long as they were unused. This what lead me to say that it may be an issue with the old Taylor's given how h...

Advice for starting a new cake of vintage soap

As many of you know I use the old formula of Taylor's English Lavender shaving soap. These cakes are old, how old I don't rightly know. But one thing I've come to notice over the years is that when starting a new cake of it the lather can be hard to coax. About three days ago I started a new cake wh...

Re: The Science of Sharp Blog

After today's shave and inspired somewhat by this thread I touched up the TI on the red pasted Dovo balsa strop followed by my leather pasted crox strop. I thenstropped on my Dovo pasted linen followed by the Jemico white, the Jemico red, the plain linen of Magic strop, and of course the leather of ...

Re: Dominica Bay Rum

Been using the Grand Bay Rum for about a year now. It's nigh similar to my favored Dominica, maybe less clove. I actually like it better. I just don't like the bottles so I just decant into my old cork topped bottle from ages ago (did the same with Dominica for years after they switched bottles). I'...

Re: Back to Thiers Issard

Dr. Moss, great response. IMHO singing has nothing to do with performance. I get what you're saying though with regards to twanging and singing razors. Remember though that TI advertised these razors as "full singing hollows". And they do sing but I believe for a different reason. When I run my palm...

Back to Thiers Issard

For the past few months I've been having a dalliance with my German lady from Boker. She is truly great and gives a superb comfortable shave. Last weekend though I came home to the Lady of the House, my Thiers Issard razor of many years. I've remained with her since. I don't know what it is but the ...

Gary, I got that email too.

Sad to hear of the events but hope the new venture goes well.

One thing I was disappointed to see is there are no Alpa products. I loved their Alpa Fougere and hope they will carry it again one day.

Re: What's for supper?

Brian, got it. Maybe just try one yolk? I don't know. When I made my most recent mayo it was following a clone recipe for Hellman's (and it seems pretty faithful in terms of ingredients) I only used one egg - the whole egg, white and all. It was raw and the mayo turned out much like what you'd make ...
