Back to a two-pass shave

Well, I posted some time ago that I retreated to one-pass shave. Lately though I have returned to a two-pass. My inspiration for such a change came from re-reading the old barber's text book. Barbers of old did a second pass on their clients with water only. Wanting to get as close as I used to I tr...

Re: What I've learned so far...

I came across this thread recently for some reason even though it's going on eleven years old. I must say when I re-read it I found much wisdom in what Michael posted.

Re: FYSA Dominica and Grand Bay

Ira, Yeah, there's not a whole lot that goes into Bay Rum from what I read but there seem to be differences if ever so slight. Truth be told, I really like the Grand Bay now that I've tried it. It's very close to Dominica but, dare I say it, better? It *seems* to have more bay oils in it and I reall...

Re: The Science of Sharp Blog

Dr. Moss and Gary, Thanks so much for embarking on this with me. Your observations were more or less in line with my own on this and it's nice to see some of the learned hands come up with what you've come up with. I will say I do agree that this can be a method to use on a recalcitrant razor. It se...

Re: The Science of Sharp Blog

I've got my popcorn ready to read the results of this. My prediction is rough shave.

Did you catch the one post where he says that he does not breadknife his edges before starting yet another practitioner of this method does? Maddening.

Re: The Science of Sharp Blog

Third shave with this edge today, and it has calmed down to a smooth experience. Makes me wonder if the deliberately induced wire-edge wasn't broken off properly. The first two shaves certainly felt like the edge was ragged. C. That's an excellent thought about the wire edge. I actually made the de...

Dishwashing Machine Trick

Please move if not in the appropriate forum. I didn't know where to post it but wanted to tie it to cooking so here's my first go. If you have hard water add dishwashing liquid to the pre-wash chamber. We load ours until it's burgeoning. It works a treat to help get those dishes extra clean. We use ...

Re: pots and pans

Clive, thanks so much! That's pretty awesome. I'm going to check out the local restaurant supply store whenever the next chance comes up. With prices like that I can't lose. Gary, that story hits home as I did the same thing to our Ameriware frying once prior to the non-stick surface coming off. The...

Re: pots and pans

Brian, excellent suggestions. I will definitely check the local restaurant supply stores. I agree about the "set" issue. I may just buy stuff piecemeal. Clive, I agree about aluminum, it has been excellent. Just that darn proprietary teflon that Ameriware has used - when it starts to break down it c...

Re: The Science of Sharp Blog

Glad you tried this. I find your description of your results consistent with what I experienced and that is comforting.

I had a similar thought about a linen strop treated with the Dovo white paste.

Re: FYSA Dominica and Grand Bay

Some while back I talked to the owner at Cantilles and he is a nice person. I got a similar story from him but the twist was that the producers of Dominica are re-tooling/upgrading/whatever their manufacturing facility. The hurricanes have set them back but eventually Dominica will be back in produc...

The Science of Sharp Blog

Anybody see this? https://scienceofsharp.wordpress.com/ It's a fascinating read with lots of electron microscope pictures. It is written by a gentleman named Todd who, I believe is a member at another forum(s). I gave his honing method a go and it does produce a very keen edge. However, for my own t...

Re: pots and pans

Interesting and timely thread for me. Thanks for bringing this up! I've been contemplating getting a new set of pots and pans myself. I've been looking at the All Clad stainless steel copper core set. I'd like for the next set to last the rest of my life. For the last fourteen years we've been using...

Re: News about Straight Razor Place forum

I'm flabbergasted. I can't believe someone could get away with this.

I see Vintage Blades and Classic Shaving have also been taken over by the same guy. Well, I won't be patronizing those places anymore.

Re: MDC Rose and Vetyver

Murray, somewhere on the www is a shop that sells among others, mdc samples. Maybe buy a test slither before forking over $$$$ for a jar you might hate. Sorry i dont have the sellers web address to give you clive I'll second Clive's suggestion. That's how I tried the original MdC. Unfortunately I d...

Clive, this one is an oldie but a goodie. I remember Classic Shaving selling it way back when and I tried it. I had the same experience as you. I sold it off because it gave me a bit of irritation as well. I remember it had a great scent though.

This blade finally needed to go to the hones on September 27th. It lasted nearly a year which is fantastic.

I hope this next edge will do the same.

Dr. Moss, A very heartwarming story. I can definitely relate to the joy of picking up the straight again after laying it down a bit. There is nothing like the satisfaction they give.
