many years ago here in Philadelphia totally off topic: Im coming to philly first thing sat morning to have tacos! :D :D :D http://southphillybarbacoa.com/ clive Clive, enjoy the tacos. We have taco night here in our home a few times a month and daughter number 3 always celebrates by playing and sin...

Re: Titanic

Wow, are they selling that stuff as souvenirs? When the exhibit was at the Franklin Institute many years ago here in Philadelphia I went to it. I was very pleased with it and even got to touch one of the davits they had on display brought up from the sea floor. As far as I remember they did not sell...

Re: Stropping questions from a straight razor newbie

I can't say about that stuff as I've never used it. I use a crayon crox that was used by Mastro Livi. No one seems to carry it anymore which is astonishing to me as it is excellent (and, yeah, I'd use that crayon on balsa as well as leather). One crayon will last you a lifetime. Hopefully Dr. Moss w...

Re: BB 1818 replacement

Expand the budget and buy the Floris Santal is my only recommendation.

1818 is quite unique and I've never smelled anything like it. If it's gone then it's gone.

Sometimes there is no alternative.

Re: Sweet Almond Oil and Safari

One of these days I'll get a cake of that Safari soap. It has slightly intrigued me for many years. As a much younger man I wore the scent, it was my Friday scent. I liked it and it always drew positive comments, but that was many years ago. Now I can't even stand to wear it, it's too obnoxious. My ...

Re: Playing with paddle strops again

I'll be looking forward to your results. Just to be clear on my end of what I've used. I use the green crox crayon from Livi. I don't know how it compares to other crox preparations so take it with a grain of salt. It's on a hanging strop, one of those reverse type of Russian leather strops and the ...

Re: Playing with paddle strops again

Yes, the strop with thick red felt under the leather. It came in a box with a brown wax-like paper that surrounded the whole of it. As far as red paste goes I remember a lot about it being used before the black crayon (you know, the two that came together in foil). I assume what's on the balsa side ...

Re: Playing with paddle strops again

We must be on the same wavelength at different times. About six months ago I broke out a paddle strop from Dovo that was pasted with red paste on one side and the red Jemico leather on the other. I've never used this strop before for various reasons. I bought it about 15 years ago when I was first m...

Re: Playing with paddle strops again

Interesting. Can't you just take the Jemico Red Russian hanging strop? I find this an excellent travel strop.

How long will the trip be? If it was at length I'd take two razors though I'd probably only need the one, but just in case.

Re: Return to Simplicity

Wendell, excellent post! I'm getting there too. I still have a plethora of stuff to use up but mostly use my mainstay things. The only thing I seem to replenish these days is my beloved Bay Rum. In these days of plenty I think many men go through this, it's what we do. We find the best of the best f...

Re: Why sandalwood?

For myself I like sandalwood though I rarely use it in any sense.

My special use for it is Christmas Day when I will, most years, use Trumper's Sandalwood cream for my shave. It's intoxicating and it's memory is tied to the first Christmas I was married. Great memories if good times.

Re: Old Video

Bill, did you notice when he says "back in the box"? He's putting used lather back in the soap dish. Depression Era mentality is all I can come up with. Plus that video was shot, I believe, in the early 1990's. Bath soap back then was mostly tallow based with almost no glycerin in it. Today I believ...

Old Video

This video was posted elsewhere but I thought we might enjoy it here as well.

I suspect there is a lot going on here that is not presented in the video. The shave at the end is pretty cool.

Hope you enjoy.

Re: Vulfix Luxury Shaving Cream - Wild Lavender

Great review!

So it's called "Wild Lavender" now? From what I recall it was just lavender a decade ago. I wonder if the fragrance has been changed.

I liked it and I am tempted to dig what I have out and try it again.

Re: Gordon?

Gary, I know he went through some upheaval in his life and married a younger woman.

I imagine he's pursuing things like a man who married a younger woman would. If so, his distraction is very understood and good on him.

I still hope he returns one day.
