Re: Why sandalwood?

For myself I like sandalwood though I rarely use it in any sense.

My special use for it is Christmas Day when I will, most years, use Trumper's Sandalwood cream for my shave. It's intoxicating and it's memory is tied to the first Christmas I was married. Great memories if good times.

Re: Old Video

Bill, did you notice when he says "back in the box"? He's putting used lather back in the soap dish. Depression Era mentality is all I can come up with. Plus that video was shot, I believe, in the early 1990's. Bath soap back then was mostly tallow based with almost no glycerin in it. Today I believ...

Old Video

This video was posted elsewhere but I thought we might enjoy it here as well.

https://vimeo.com/268814380

I suspect there is a lot going on here that is not presented in the video. The shave at the end is pretty cool.

Hope you enjoy.

Re: Vulfix Luxury Shaving Cream - Wild Lavender

Great review!

So it's called "Wild Lavender" now? From what I recall it was just lavender a decade ago. I wonder if the fragrance has been changed.

I liked it and I am tempted to dig what I have out and try it again.

Re: Gordon?

Gary, I know he went through some upheaval in his life and married a younger woman.

I imagine he's pursuing things like a man who married a younger woman would. If so, his distraction is very understood and good on him.

I still hope he returns one day.

Re: What are you reading?

I have temporarily set down Schlesinger's Journals to re-read Gone With The Wind. I was gifted a 1936 fourth printing copy by a dear old high school friend who died at the age of twenty-seven from brain cancer. He was one of those rare individuals who lit up a room wherever he went. He gave it to me...

Re: Rose, Cyril Salter and Vetiver

Sam, I am vetiver lover and I find the Salter French Vetiver cream a treat. You've got to try it yourself though as it has elicited very strong reactions. That's all I can say about it. You'll either love it or hate it. As far as rose is concerned I had a tub of the Salter's and though I liked it I ...

Re: "That Lather"

Tim, a question that dawned on me and that you may be able to answer is: How much unsaponified glycerin remains in the traditional hard soaps like Taylor's and Trumper's etc? I perceive it's very little if any because I know I am sensitive to glycerin but can use hard soaps quite well. Creams seem t...

Re: Truefitt & Hill Creams

Sam, good question. It's been nigh a decade since I bought any creams. But I remember a time when T&H in America was not as expensive as the others yet in other parts of the world it was more expensive. I think that may have changed.

Indeed rest in peace to those that have given the ultimate sacrifice. There is no greater love. I often reflect and converse with my friends and children about how we sit here in the greatest civilization man has ever created. I think we are so lucky and yet without those that gave all we wouldn't b...

Re: "That Lather"

Rick, nice stuff. Hope you enjoy it. At the risk of sounding too technical and prone to believe marketing hype today I shaved with the palm version of Trumper's Sandalwood. What ensued actually reminded me of an old Yardley advertisement for the their shaving soap. Yardley has an old advertisement a...

Re: Truefitt & Hill Creams

Adhoc, there are some similarities, to my nose, between the Atkinson's and the T&H Lavender cream but they are not the same scent IMHO. The Atkinson's is fresh and bright while the T&H is something else - more earthen-like maybe - but yet clean. I suspect T&H has rosemary in it somewhere along with ...

Re: Truefitt & Hill Creams

Adhoc, that is a fantastic acquisition! I am happy for you. T&H Lavender cream is fantastic. And the scent, to me, is the best of any lavender cream. It's so good that if T&H made a lavender water out of the same scent I'd buy it by the gallon. I always thought T&H was missing out on a huge opportun...

Adhoc, yes, what was offered to men by Yardley back in the day was an aftershave.

No worries on the English I think you finally came through loud and clear.

I hope you find the aftershave, it was one of the best ever offered by any firm.

Re: "That Lather"

Just for the record, I love the Palmolive scent. I could definitely use something that smelled like that daily. The gumminess is the only drawback for me. Went back to the Taylor's today and I could feel that the skin was a little raw from the drag caused by the gumminess of the Palmolive the day be...

Re: Journals by Arthur Scheslinger Jr.

I find it fascinating for the short one-liners here and there. It can give a slight insight into how some historical folks thought and expressed in the age before everything is published (ours). Interesting line recently read (I'm describing from memory): Arthur had an outing in the late 1970's with...
