Another vote for the Simpson X2L. The BK4 is superb as well. I could be just fine with one of those brushes.

Cetaphil is a great facial wash and the only one I will use. The sensitive is super gentle, doesn't dry out my skin at all, and is readily available. I haven't tried out Jack Black or the others but I don't really have any desire to.

I haven't tried the Harris Naturals but the Harris Lavender, Trumper's Rose and T&H Luxury are 3 classic shave soaps and all will produce a wonderfull lather. The T&H Luxury is primarily lavender scented as well. My personal favorite out of the three is the Trumper's Rose in both scent and p...

I would say the old tallow-based Penhaligon's or Valobra/Art of Shaving.

The scents of the AOS soaps are just ok. I actually prefer the plain Valobra shave stick in the scent department, but the lather agrees with my face better than the 3T's for whatever the reason. They are pricey but definitely worth checking out and one puck will last 4-6 months.

Out of the brushes you listed I would get a Commodore, but if you are willing to look outside of that list I agree with Gordon on this one. The Colonel X2L in Best has been my go to brush for the past few months over brushes that cost 2-3x as much.

FS Simpson's 57 Super two-band (ie The Douglas) - Sold

I have for sale a two-banded Simpson Douglas used ~5 times. Still has the Simpson box. It's a fine brush but I am picky and find it smaller than my ideal. I will sell it for $150 shipped CONUS. Paypal only please.

Thanks,

Clint

So much of it is personal I think you probably need to experiment some to find what works with you. For instance most Trumper's soaps bother my skin over time even though I love the scents. Same with most of the 3T's shaving creams. On the other hand Proraso and Tabac don't bother my skin at all eve...

MWF is one of the most well regarded shaving soaps out there but I could never get it to lather right and have tried out 30+ soaps and never had a problem getting plenty of lather from any of them. I have extremely hard water in my area and I have a feeling that may have something to do with it. Clint

I agree. Great stuff. A lot of products give me skin issues but for whatever the reason my skin always feel great after using Proraso. In the summer I use it almost exclusively.

I usually get two weeks or so from 1 Hydro cartridge as well while the typical Sensor cartridge doesn't even last me a week. The problem is a have a feeling that the blade quality in the Sensor has decreased from when it was originally released because they seem to pull a lot more than I remember. T...

I think the Hydro is one of the best cartridge razors I have used. I use it often to shave my neck which is prone to irritation. I don't seem to get the in-growns that I get with some of the other cartridge razors for whatever reason. It does release quite a bit of goop which wouldn't appeal to many...

I know Penworks has a shop on the North Side of town. You can find Art of Shaving at V's Barbershop. For the most part though shave goods are pretty scarce.

The brush could be part of it. With my larger brushes I have plenty of lather for 3-4 passes, but with my smaller, less dense brushes I have to recharge the brush after each pass.

Trumper's Limes and Penhaligon's English Fern are my two favorite scents. The Trumper's Rose is also excellent if you enjoy rose fragrances.

I have tried the Hydro 3 and have found I preferred it to the Fusion and Mach 3 but I still didn't like it as well as the Sensor Excel which is my favorite cartridge razor. The lube strip provides a lot of cushion and tends to gunk up the razor when in use with traditional shaving creams but it stil...
