Re: Used up my Coates stash...what’s good these days?

St. James of London creams are fairly old-school and worth checking out. Unfortunately, shaving creams haven’t enjoyed the renaissance that artisan soaps have the past few years.

Within weeks, the set of three videos was sent to me and I was off and running.

Thank you, Mark.

Re: Badger Cull To End

For what it’s worth, I remain skeptical that any type of English badger hair will reemerge in brushes, or that it’s even something to hope for. It’s very hard comparing brushes of different eras, and there are an awful lot of good products that originate from China.

Re: Badger Cull To End

I don’t prefer giant brushes, but I have a 28mm Synbad brush that I set pretty low. It has the closest thing to a badger feel I’ve come across. It’s still not quite the same, but it is great in its own right.

*SOLD* Trumper Rose - Tallow and Potassium Palmate

I have a very rare NIB Trumper Rose Shaving Soap in a Bowl (tallow) and two NIB Potassium Palmate refills for sale. The Potassium Palmate version was the first non-tallow Trumper soap that was considered to be also excellent. Perhaps some lovers of these classics can put them to good use. 1. Tallow ...

Re: Badger brush - been out of the game a bit

There are good options at that price point, but none would be better than buying a Maggard’s Super High Density knot and putting it in a cheapish handle yourself. They sell combo kits to do just that on their site. While some of their SHD knots can require a bit too much work, the smaller knot sizes...

Re: Intensity of Scent - Castle Forbes and Truefitt & Hill CREAMS

Sad to hear that. T&H has one of the closest Almond scents to D.R. Harris that I’ve tried. For a period of time, Harris creams were rather poor, leaving T&H as the replacement. Thankfully that isn’t the case anymore.

Re: Rooney... catch me up?!?

Thank you to everyone who's replied. Seeing so many dead sites made me unsure that M&F was actually still available through Brad Sears, and that's genuinely helpful to know. Knots that begin at 26mm, on the other hand, are not so helpful. But perhaps truly custom and not bespoke is possible. I a...

Rooney... catch me up?!?

So, I’ve spent about a decade away from the forums (for the most part). I now realize that I basically skipped over a crucial period in brushes. Am I correct in seeing that the Rooney Finest knots like the one pictured here (purchased 2008, I think) are not to be found anywhere in new brushes? It lo...

I don't know, I think I see where he is coming from. A sharper blade will be less forgiving. A more forgiving blade might allow you to get away with marginally worse technique. That seems pretty reasonable.

Re: The benefit of in-person shopping

It's hard to say how they had this many old products around. I think it's a balance of being big enough to have placed large orders years ago, but not doing a lot (or any) online sales. It was interesting how they would have some old versions, but new ones also on the shelf. I could have bought a fe...

The benefit of in-person shopping

I was on the road for nearly a month recently and needed ways to pass the time. I assume this community will approve of my choice to visit all the big wetshaving retailers that I could. I took full advantage of the various cities I travelled to and visited the following stores: Pittsburgh: Schiller’...

Re: Current state of hard soaps

Thank you, everyone, for the responses. This is exactly what I was hoping for. Did I get it wrong in my original post? Has anyone had success with Trumpers soaps purchased in the last year? I used their first non-tallow version years ago for a while with great success. I'd hate to think they haven't...

Re: Current state of hard soaps

Of course, how could I forget about MWF. Tabac, as well? The impression I get is that a number of people didn't like the AOS scents. I personally hated the Sandalwood, but I found the Lemon just fine and the Lavender was one of my favorite and top performing soaps. I'm not sure if there's an existin...

Re: Comment on using up products

Same here, Pete. I have to be honest, I'm amazed how valuable it seems to be. But people want what they want. I myself paid "way too much" for some old Trumper's Violet shaving cream recently. Truth be told, I don't regret it one bit. And now I have plenty to use liberally and enjoy, just ...

That is really interesting to see. I've seen badger hair brushes used quite frequently to clean woodwind instruments in repair shops.

Current state of hard soaps

I hate to start a new thread that so closely follows what can be found in old ones, but I thought it might not be the worst time to ask what the state is of some old favorite soaps that may or may not have become less desirable than they once were. I know this topic gets old, but it helps to put a p...

Sadly, this didn't work out. I know it's a long shot, but I wonder if anyone else out there has some they would be willing to sell for a handsome profit?

Thanks!

Re: Shave cream recommendations

A friend of mine brought back a tub of CF Lime from Scotland a few years ago. I really liked it, though not so much more than other creams to justify the price. I do need to try their Lavender, though, so thanks for reminding me!
