Travelling with a Straight and Coping with Disparity

I'm three years into my 'partial remission'/retirement, and spending as much time as I can exploiting my 1991 Miata that had only 32k KM on it in 2015. This has come to mean providing transport for The Boss, who continues to work and does so all over the place. She is a sub-specialist who basically ...

Re: Elections

Rule #1 is not your enemy: it is your friend. Without it, you might not be allowed to hold your opinion. With it, you can hold any opinion you like, although you don't get to inflict it upon members of a shaving forum. In this forum I don't care whether you are a rabid communist or an idiotic right-...

It's not a tech issue, but a copyright problem. You can pay for the right to use the clip in some limited fashion, but only after negotiating with Getty. Even the preview for it requires filling in a form and asking for access.

Re: Royal Yacht

Considering past glories, I should mention that the other Royal Yacht - from Alfred Dunhill - is no longer available. It seems the Danish company that license the name and recipe from Dunhill aren't willing to ruin the tin art with photos of various cancers as EU regs now require for pipe tobacco. S...

No umbrage taken, but do follow the rules. Rule #1 would seem applicable.

Coffee

I've been learning about coffee roasting for six months or so, starting with a hot air popcorn machine, and now using a modified device that offers more control (a FreshRoast SR500). I have always loved the machines and mechanisms involved in making coffee, especially those with art deco styling. Sa...

Re: Zowada Time

Well, good bloody God. I just had a knock at the door and an old guy presented me with a lovely old bench hone with two leather surfaces impressed "Lipshaw Mfg. Co., Detroit USA". It seems I 'fixed him up' after he slipped on the ice a few years ago and he thought I ought to have it, despite his wif...

Zowada Time

I'm lucky enough to have eight TZ damascus razors, one from his early days and seven from the era when Tim had got into his stride. These, along with all the others on the Wall of Shame, have returned home now my office has been sold. My nicest razors have ended up in two display cases on my bedroom...

Re: Taking a break from really sharp blades

It comes down to technique, doesn't it? If you use a Feather all the time you get used to being very light-fingered in your shave and you don't end up cutting yourself. The problem comes from switching around and confuses the muscle memory. Having said that, in my DE days my favourite blade was the ...

Re: Titanic

In 1981, during my first trip to Halifax, I visited the Titanic exhibit in the Museum of the Atlantic. The wreck hadn't been discovered in those days, and it was mostly floating debris that had been picked up - deckchairs (definitely re-arranged!) etc. Then to the sad graveyard, ingloriously tucked ...

Re: Stropping questions from a straight razor newbie

Now that I think of it, are the following instructions valid for a balsa strop? (from https://www.fendrihan.ca/collections/strops-and-hones/products/chromox-green-chromium-oxide-finishing-paste-by-thiers-issard) I think they're assuming the user will be using a leather strop, not balsa. Important: ...

Re: Stropping questions from a straight razor newbie

If that is your only strop, Bill, I wouldn't put paste on it at all. A razor should not meet a pasted strop every day, and to have a strop that will discolour whatever it touches when you pack it for travel isn't fun. Ideally, you want a second strop for a touch up paste, and you use it only when yo...

Re: Hypothetically, what would happen if I click on "delete all board cookies"?

The stupid thing about the Globe and Mail is that I tried quite hard to get a subscription to the physical paper, but they didn't deliver it in rural Nova Scotia, and now for the last year, they don't print a copy for sale in the whole of eastern Canada at all. Once they stopped, our other 'national...

Re: Hypothetically, what would happen if I click on "delete all board cookies"?

If it works the same way deleting all smf cookies in your browser preferences does, you would lose your saved log-in, and have to re-enter username and password. All posts and threads would appear unread, and any notifications of follow-up posts would be cancelled. Nothing terrible, in other words. ...

Re: Playing with paddle strops again

The black velvety suede side ('Cote Pate' is now marked on the handle) is magic, both for plain stropping or for holding just the right amount of paste (which is very little). They have recently changed the leather on the other side from a brown suede to a more coarse surface which isn't as useful a...

Re: Cannibidiol CBD - what's up with this stuff?

Read the science for yourself. It's plain that there's a hundred claims made for medical marijuana for every one that has some truth. Many of them boil down to it being nicer to have a symptom and be high, than it is to have the symptom and not be high. In less than two weeks every adult in Canada w...
