Re: Speaking of having random memories ---

The Trades Descriptions Act of 1968 took away many of the slogans of my childhood. No longer could Guinness be "good for you", and Mackeson Stout might still look good, taste good, but no more "and by golly, it does you good!" Craven A tobacco (a descendant of the brand referred to as Arcadia Mixtur...

Re: English Fern tallow soap by Penhaligon's

You're right - it's not black magic to make a decent shaving soap. But if you have to obey EU rules about banned ingredients, and you have bean-counters who have decreed that profit will be maximised by using cheaper ingredients, plus you're selling to a generally ignorant public who can't tell the ...

Re: Gokumyo 20k

I've bought far too many new razors, and the only ones that came sharp enough were customs where the maker had honed them himself. I think it is possible to hone a straight so that it is very close to the feel of a new safety blade, but such an edge takes some combination of skill, patience and luck...

Chris, what was the purpose behind refreshing the soap? Will it perform better now than it would have in its previous hardened state?

That was my hope - a rock hard soap turned back into a soft and pliable form.

Re: Do I need a boar brush?

Chris, do I recall correctly that one of those boars went to Gordon, with the stipulation that if he used it exclusively for a month you would send him a really nice (Plisson?) badger brush? (It seems to me I remember a lot of grumbling from Gordon during that month.) - Murray I sent him the Plisso...

Re: Do I need a boar brush?

But the great advantage of boar brushes is that they are cheap to replace. I bought a six-pack of Omega beech-handled brushes from emsplace.com, and ended up giving four away, and using two (home and travel kit). All for less than the price of a good badger brush. A mistake I made when I was young w...

Re-batching Shaving Soap

One of the problems of making your own is that you can end up with a lot of it, and you always give away samples from the last batch as that is the freshest and perhaps the best given you learn as you go along. I have a few pounds of soap that has sat in the basement for several years. It's hard and...

Re: Gokumyo 20k

I guess we have to address the issue that when Aspies become obsessively interested in a topic they can lose the objective viewpoint, and become swayed by opinion (especially their own) rather than facts. It's a small step beyond that to assuming some flavour of a religious belief. Why are pastes wr...

Re: Gokumyo 20k

Yeah, pastes get a bad rap from the nerds too. Honing on a single coticule, or just a Norton 4k/8k is a party trick , not a way for ordinary shavers to get their razors into a reliably usable state. I don't hesitate to use pastes if I find an edge better with them. My usual finisher these days is a ...

Greetings, Chris! Good to hear from you, too. Leica and Plisson...when they pry them from my cold dead fingers. Any word from Gordon?

Bests,

Buzz
Not a peep from Gordon (to whom I gave my only Plisson). I fear the worst.

Re: Gokumyo 20k

Judge your razor and stone by the shave, not by what a self-proclaimed expert on a forum tells you he has discovered, and I include myself (no 'expert' really) in that warning, but no one can argue with the test of a hone is a close and comfy shave, can they? Funny how straights got honed and used f...

Re: Starting over with an open blade

Today was a step backward in that I drew blood, but it was a simple error: I was doing an XTG stroke below my nose and didn't make sure the angle was right. A nice, clean cut that bled a bit. No irritation whatsoever today, though, and the shaves are still close enough for work, albeit not as glass...

Re: What is it about brushes?

It's a funny thing, but this last few years I have neglected all my badger brushes and use only an Omega boar brush. It doesn't look so pretty, and there's not much pride of ownership, but I really like it!

Nice to see you, Buzz. I sold my last Leica and lenses this week. 😢

Re: I want to know what's the different of IPL and Laser!

Intense Pulsed Light - not coherent like a laser, but ordinary light from a flashgun. It's also not a single wavelength, like a tunable dye laser. It's a lot less powerful in its effects than a laser, but is able to treat small telangiectases. It's not very good at hair removal, but has been adopted...

Re: The Science of Sharp Blog

Those are real razors. The most under-appreciated type of straight in my opinion, being easy to hone, easy to shave with and capable of shaves with far less irritation than a full-hollow.

Re: Starting over with an open blade

You can certainly do it that fast, but that decreases the time for which you can indulge in this pleasure! My advice: get up 10 minutes earlier and have a 20 minute shave.
