Re: "That Lather"

Oh, you're probably right in that it was Tabac and Irisch Moos that were siblings. I agree that the Palmolive stick was right up there as it sits under the Moos and the Speick at the same end of the same shelf. Perhaps the common factor is that shaving sticks are old-fashioned, and thus likely to be...

Re: How to Lather Shaving Soap in a Bowl or Mug (Video)

Thank you, Chris. I've made the update to the signature per the rule. That said, I was actually looking for a way to donate to the forum. I believe the time, effort and hosting costs could be compensated, if people find the establishment beneficial to them and choose to do so. Thank you for your qu...

Re: "That Lather"

Is that a good thing or a bad thing, Chris? I remember the old T&H as absolutely top tier, but years and many other products and lathers have passed in the interim, and the newer T&H stuff is awful. I wasn't very impressed. A rather thin and 'crisp' lather, not the shiny, gooey thick stuff I like. ...

Re: How to Lather Shaving Soap in a Bowl or Mug (Video)

Welcome to SMF. Might I point out that we have some rules for vendors, and this is your polite notice that much as we are glad to have you, we would still like you to comply with them. Rule 4 of the Posting Guidelines says: 4. Vendors are asked to make all posts that constitute self-advertisement in...

Re: "That Lather"

I used my old Salter soap yesterday and I'd swear it is the same as T&H (or at least, as T&H used to be since that's probably changed too in the interim).

Re: "That Lather"

Having been made to get on and do something, here is the result of my attempt to make a hard bath soap with (mostly) olive oil: http://drmoss.ca/Web%20Images/IMG_0304.jpg http://drmoss.ca/Web%20Images/IMG_0305.jpg http://drmoss.ca/Web%20Images/IMG_0306.jpg I'll let it cool overnight and then chop it...

Re: "That Lather"

I poked around in the shelves of shame today (I used C&E Sandalwood soap for the shave and was wondering what to go for tomorrow). I found one of my generic eBay wooden bowls labelled Cyril Salter soap with a barely used cake of what smells exactly like the old T&H soap. I must have been content to ...

Re: Kitchen knives

I gratefully accept your rebuke. Politics is generally dynamite to a forum, but some instances are just so stupid, I can't help but break my own rules. There's a lot more to be said about this issue, but I will refrain if you will (OK, even if you won't!)

Re: "That Lather"

So 50% olive oil, 10% coconut, 10% castor oil and 30% stearic acid sounds good? All saponified with KOH? Shall I add the superfat after the cook, and if so what would you recommend? I don't mind the scent of olive oil and I'm a complete klutz at adding scents, so I probably won't try. I need a proje...

I don't know that Private Internet Access as a VPN does what it says. I'm currently connected as being in Montreal, but if I go to Google News it serves me District of Columbia as my 'Local News'!

Re: "That Lather"

Tim, I was going to mention that the Salter soap does in fact smell very similar to the T&H Luxury soap. My first quality soap was indeed the Luxury soap, and no matter what, after many years I still can't get a good lather out of it. I had a few cakes and used them up as bath soaps. When the Salte...

Re: Kitchen knives

If you live in the UK you might want to stock up on knife sharpening supplies and maybe even a new set of decent kitchen knives before this nonsense plays out. No doubt only rubber knives will be on sale soon (which may not matter given the English tendency to boil all foods to death and the renowne...

Re: "That Lather"

Oh, and Chris, about "that lather" and hard water: I wonder if the combination of the old fatty acid profile and the presence of Tetrasodium EDTA is what really made the difference. There are not mineral chelators in most of the artisan soaps, and I understand their aversion to EDTA, but for really...

Re: Rolling My Own

It is good to be back at SMF, and it's a bid odd to realize that the soapmaking thing happened about 5 years into my wetshaving journey, which in turn was a full 5 years ago. The last half-decade has flown by. The feeling is just the same when you realise you are looking back over multiple decades....

Ah, a 'scrubber'. AKA a slapper, or a slag in UK slang. What it might mean in the US I don't know, but I'm probably letting my mind wander where it ought not to go.

Re: Rescuing my GFT Eucris

Just be sure to leave a tap in the kitchen with unsoftened water, since soft water tastes terrible to those used to the hard stuff. The Eucris soap is from a younger generation than my other Trumper soaps, and it surely shows in the performance. It's sad to think they are probably all like that now....

Re: "That Lather"

I have old formulation creams and tallow soaps from the big names from that era. Chris is absolutely right: they outshine the palm oil crap and don't come with a free, but dead, orang utan. I don't suppose Brexit will mean the reversal of the EU directives that have destroyed some of our favourites,...
