Re: SilkSmoke synthetic brush

Hi Gary -

I like that the manufacturer didn't feel obliged to add a sketch to the loft, which would make it look like something that it isn't.

I'll be interested to read your impressions. Is it offered in a 24mm knot, as well?

Re: Kitchen knives

Jim, are you talking about honing or sharpening? I have never managed to get the results you describe with a honing steel or a ceramic honing rod, whose purpose is primarily to realign the edge, with a mild sharpening effect added. If you are actually achieving such results with a steel/ceramic honi...

Re: Kitchen knives

Hi Brian - Thanks for the very complete explanation. I agree that it is not possible to apply a honing rod at the exact angle to match the bevel, so a honing station in the sharpener would be a good thing. My reservation about using such a sharpener with carbon steel is that it appears to be designe...

Re: Kitchen knives

Question about the Chef's Choice electric sharpeners: As I recall, these electric sharpeners install what they call a "Trizor" edge, which is a new bevel (perhaps two bevels) and a textured edge. Does a knife with a Trizor edge still respond well to maintenance with a steel or ceramic honing rod, or...

Re: Kitchen knives

That's what we use too FW' . Once you get the edge converted over to the 15° angle it's a walk in the park. I love the thing. Our knives have never been sharper and I thought I was doing good with sharpening by hand. But now they are much sharper. I watch cooking shows and when I see a chef abusing...

Bill, welcome to SMF and I hope you have a very Happy 60th Birthday!

I'm not a scuttle user, so I can't help you there, but I'm sure someone more qualified to respond will chime in.

Re: Lather hog

My badger brushes do seem to withhold a bit more of the lather, but that really hasn't been an issue for me. I load the brush until it is full , at which point there is no difficulty accessing the lather. After the shave, I squeeze the remaining lather out of the brush back onto the cake of soap, an...

I just wear boxers. Before that, years ago, I wore briefs. I have never understood the appeal of boxer briefs.

Re: Synthetic Brushes and Optimal Size

Murray, following up --- the Tuxedo is a 24mm synthetic knot with backbone. These things keep getting better and better. Here's another thing I have learned about synthetics: they don't hog lather as much as badger. That's a good thing, because what benefit do we get from a brush that's jammed full...
