Re: Advice for starting a new cake of vintage soap

Old soaps that may be reluctant to lather usually are revitalized by grating and re-packing into a bowl before use. I do this with all of my soaps to fit them into a one-cup Pyrex bowl. I think grating up the soap and re-packing it in this fashion makes any soap easier to lather, not to mention vin...

Re: Advice for starting a new cake of vintage soap

Good information from Chris and John. Thanks to you both!

I've never bought vintage soap, so this has never been and issue for me. It's worth keeping in mind, however, in case I ever do.

You've got my attention, Tim. A true fan or flat-top in synthetic could be really good, depending upon the quality of the fiber.

I'll be watching for more about these brushes.

Thanks, Gary. I have, indeed, heard about this soap. I just hadn't seen it identified with an acronym.

Re: I’m looking for very mild safety razors for sensitive skin. HELP!

Hi Alan - I guess I just experience all GEM and GEM-type razors as aggressive, the 1912 especially so. I'm sure lather is a part of it. I want lather with maximal glide and minimal cushion, which favors a mild razor. A more aggressive razor would require that I entirely rework my approach to latheri...

Re: I’m looking for very mild safety razors for sensitive skin. HELP!

The Schick Type L is too aggressive for me (definitely not what I would consider mild); the M-Adjustable at lowest setting is good; and I haven't tried the Type N (though I have one). Of the razors Alan mentioned, I would agree that the Gillette Tech is too mild and that the Schick Krona is mild. Be...

Each blade has its own guard, and I think that spaces the blades farthar apart than on the Trac II.

Think of the guards as border collies for your stubble.
I like your metaphor, Paul. =D>

I kind of like this change of direction and fresh thinking on Gillette's part.

Rene Descartes ordered a drink in a bar.

When he was finished the bartender asked him if he'd like another.

Descartes responded, "I think not." And he disappeared.
That's a clever one, Russ. 8)

Re: Col Conk revisit

Thanks for the links, slackskin. The offerings from Em's Place look promising. At least they make reference to using essential oils "as applicable." My experience with Kell's in the past was that they used fragrance oils and it looks like they may still. The Classic Shaving offerings also appear to ...

Re: Col Conk revisit

Hi Chris - My favorite commercial soap is Valobra hard soap, though it isn't triple-milled. Interestingly enough, I think Valobra quadruple-mills their bath soaps but they apparently don't want their shave soap (shave stick or cake) to be that hard. I, too, have recently been curious about the old g...

Hi Gil! Glad to have you back. My favorites: Razors: Rockwell 6C (plate 2) and Mergress (at lowest setting). Blades: I get along well with most decent blades. Favorites are Personna Med Prep, Perma-Sharp Super, Super Iridium, Treet Dura Sharp, Tiz (Iranian brand), and many others. Among vintage blad...
