Honestly I use sound the most as feedback, followed by feel. I could practically shave blindfolded it I use these two methods right. The Vision is especially loud and has a very distinct note when at the correct angle. I've made the mistake and kept the fan on before while shaving and I always have...

If it's any consolation, I got the same kind of thing during my first week using a DE. I've since adjusted my blade angle to be extremely shallow (less than 30 degrees with the skin, easily). Visualizing the blade passing just over the skin and cutting the hair without touching helps me keep a good ...

Thanks for all of the suggestions, guys! I'll take a look around, narrow it down, and let you know when I've purchased one. I'm forcing myself to wait until after President's Day Weekend so I can get the fridge on sale and not spend my entire refund on shaving equipment (as much as I'd enjoy that!)....

Welcome to SMF! I have little advice to offer as I'm still starting out with a DE. But this place has been great for fun reads, good advice, and warm welcomes. :D

Shaving Brush Suggestions?

I'm happy to be getting a nice return on my taxes this year. After buying a much needed new refrigerator, I should have a bit left over to stick into savings, but some disc golf equipment (my outdoor addiction), and shaving supplies (saving the best for last, at least in this list). I'd like to get ...

Welcome to SMF! I started with some Proraso and a Mach III myself. My first DE razor is a Merkur HD and while there's been a learning curve, it's blown the Mach III out of the water. I'm thinking about a badger brush myself to replace a cheap, but usable, boar hair brush once my tax return comes in ...

Very nice! I'm going to share that with my math-advantaged friends. I'm sure they'll get a kick out of it. Some are teachers, too, so I'm sure they'll find it useful.

Thanks for sharing!

Sal: That is GREAT news! I am in the exact same boat. First week with DE razor was KILLING my skin. I nearly gave up. 2nd week was marginally better. Now I feel I am getting close to mastering shave angle, not using my wrist at all, short strokes, heavy lather, and things are going great. I also ha...

Thanks for the tip on my neck. Using the hand towel or wash cloth definitely help stretch the skin more. However, I think I've found my main problem. Once my skin was more flat and easier to shave, I actually suffered the worst razor burn since starting using a DE. The blade was a fresh Israeli and ...

Places to Shop in the IE?

Does anyone know of some good places to buy shaving items in Southern California around the Redlands area? The Target here has the Proraso products, but it ends there. I'm not even sure what stores to look at next, frankly. Any items will do as I'll need a bit of everything sooner or later. But I'm ...

I'm using an Israeli for the first time tomorrow. I'll let you know how that goes after a couple of shaves. I definitely fall into the trap of more "mini" passes to get stubble that I'm clearly not going to get and wind up a neck full of razor burn for my trouble. I just have to remember n...

Reporting In

Just reporting in as I progress with learning how to use my DE effectively. I've switched to the Gillettes from LetterK's sampler pack. From what I've seen here, they seem to considered sharper than the Derby blades, but not as sharp as the Feather blades. Given that a move to the Merkur blades resu...

Second Blade Problems and Question

I started shaving with a DE two Thursdays ago using a Merkur HD and Derby blades. After about five shaves (the last three stunningly wonderful and nick free), I switched to a Merkur blade from letterK's sampler pack to see what the difference would feel like. I only use that blade three times. Each ...

1. About 5-6 days each week. 2. I've never gotten as close on my neck as my cheeks without irritation. Frankly, I'm glad to know others that use a DE have a similar experience. That said, I just started with a DE, so that may change in the coming weeks/months. 3. Haven't been shaving with good cream...

A few shaves after my first and things are much improved. No more nicks and a much closer shave than I've ever had in my life. Plus, I look forward to shaving. I can see why some folks start buying brushes, razors, creams, soaps, etc. until their counters are full. :) There's also a nice confidence ...

Kind of along the lines of having a forum with the top 10(00) posts, has any thought been given to creating a wiki for that purpose? It may be easier to maintain, search, and just browse around for information that can be more of an archive of forum knowledge. Just at tip. I think this place is grea...

First DE Shave Ever

I just got my Merkur HD in the mail today. I showered and shaved as soon as I got home from work. :) First, the specifics: Merkur HD Derby Extra (from LetterK's wonderful sampler pack) Proraso Shaving Creme (green tube) (Forgotten Brand Name) Boar Brush Neutrogena Razor Defense Post Shave Lotion The...

Thanks, everyone! I'm looking forward more and more to when the razor arrives (looks like next Thursday, if UPS tracking is to be believed). As for my brush, I'm no longer sure of the brand. I picked it up for ~$6 at a RiteAid in town and there's no branding anywhere on the brush. It is a boar brush...

Newbie Ready for Advice

Hi everyone, I've been shaving with a Mach3 for a long while now, but always with pain. To the point that I had to shave every other or every third day just to feel like I had healed up enough to shave again. About the time Mantic started posting his videos on YouTube, I went out and got a brush and...
