Jimmy, is your face very sensitive? If not, it's possible that someone with sensitive skin should not consider this course of action. - Murray Yes, it's pretty sensitive. I think that since I only cut about half the bristles to "sharp" that it's not as bad as if all were cut. JW

You should be able to do it as the Williams soap is glycerin based from what I understand. If the new jar is microwave safe, you can just melt both pucks in it directly. Place in the microwave on medium or low power setting for 5 seconds at a time until melted, stirring between each pass as it melts...

Mission: "Super Scrubby"

Last night I decided to try an experiment with a boar-bristle brush. The ends of the bristles were fairly uneven as it is a very inexpensive brush (under $5). I was thinking, what would happen if I trimmed up the ends of the uneven bristles so that the shape of the end of the brush and the bristle l...

That's a tricky spot for me, too. I find that on the tip of my chin I do WTG followed by XTG passes in both directions then go over it again a couple of more times, relathering each time of course. I have a hard time going against the grain there so usually don't attempt it. The XTG passes repeated ...

Most likely the numbers are used for quality control in the factory. They can trace problems back through the production process due to the markings. So if a blade is dull on a particular edge, they can go directly to the piece of equipment responsible to fix/repair/adjust as needed to correct it. JW

Yeah, and since you can already get pizza delivered, if you sign up for the new home beer delivery, you would never have to leave the house!!

Here's what I just added to the gourmet-shaving post. Any comments or corrections? A comment on winter’s effect on skin: cold, blustery weather outdoors combined with hot, dry air indoors can adversely affect a shaver’s skin. Look for soothing products that will treat your skin well. Examples: for ...

I enjoy the alum block, too. Nice feeling after the cold water rinse. At first, I rubbed it over my face and didn't rinse it off before applying AS and moisturizer, etc., but I found that it tended to dry my skin somewhat if I left it on. So now I rinse it off with a second cold water rinse lasting ...

Another thing to check is that you have fully tightened the knob that closes the doors over the blade. If it is too loose, the angle of the blade at the safety bar will be wrong and you will be scraping the skin instead of slicing the whiskers. When properly tightened, the blade will be arched in th...

I would suggest paying particular attention to beard growth patterns on the face and neck. Carefully feeling the stubble after a full day's growth and noting the direction of growth should help determine WTG, XTG and ATG shaving directions. I have a large area on both sides of my face under my jaw w...

I tried glycerin as a pre-shave a couple of times. It didn't seem to do much for me either way. I do find it useful to mix a few drops in with the lather in the bowl (hard soap or cream lather). It seems to make the lather a little denser and longer lasting. It would be something else to try at leas...

The cleanser you're using may be causing dryness. I agree with Hugo on giving the Cetaphil a try. That's what I switched to and now I have no more problems with dry skin. They sell a couple of different bars and lotion cleansers. Also, I finish up with a 50/50 mixture of aloe vera gel and Corn Huske...

Hi Steve, Welcome aboard! There are a lot of great folks here who you will find to be very helpful in your quest to a better shave. I would recommend a Gillette adjustable. You can drop it down to a 2 to minimize irritation or turn in up a notch or 3 if you really need to. I use my 1958 fat boy on a...

I find that I can go against the grain after WTG and XTG passes on all of my face and neck except for near my adam's apple. My whiskers grow almost parallel to my skin there.

I can go WTG and XTG and finish up at an angle just shy of ATG there without irritation.

Try bentonite clay. It is what some of the more expensive soaps use. It makes the lather really slick and it's pretty cheap. The highly-regarded Classic Shaving's soaps contain it: http://www.classicshaving.citymax.com/catalog/item/522960/198657.htm Check eBay or google to find stores to buy bentoni...

I find the same to be true when I use an alum bar after a cold-water rinse. No sting means no razor burn. A couple of weeks ago I was going over a couple spots on my chin too many times. The alum would burn there but nowhere else. Lately, I rarely get any sting as my technique is getting better and ...
