Northwoods Woodcraft Shaving Brushes

Thanks for your kind words!

When I was selling them on ebay five years ago, I would start the bidding at $39. The average winning bid was somewhere around $75.

Here's a brush handle I turned this weekend. It's stabilized buckeye burl. Paired with a nice premium silvertip 24mm knot, I think it's pretty nice. I'll be posting on ebay in the near future to test the interest. IMHO, it's never been a better time for shaving brush enthusiasts. There's a lot of ni...

Hi... sorry... I haven't logged in for awhile. I have quite a few knots left (I sell them as well) in silvertip and best Badger. I believe that they are mostly 25mm. I have some that are bulb shaped and some that are vase shaped. I have a lot of wood and can get pretty much anything. I also use imit...

LOL.. I guess your silence answers my question. The economy must still be keeping folks from buying quality custom brushes.

Maybe duck calls.

Northwoods Woodcraft

Hi guys... I'm back after about five years. I'm wondering if there's still a call for custom carved shaving brushes. I have quite a few knots left and have my lathe and other equipment set up. What do you think?

Olive Wood Shaving Brush on eBay

Hi folks, I found a nice piece of Olive Wood from Bethlehem, Israel and made a brush from it. You can bid on it at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=300268308295&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT http://www.postimage.org/Pq1YDTZi.jpg It has a Silvertip knot in it but I haven'...

Hi, I don't think "pulling" will do it. If it does, your knot isn't glued in well in the first place. I usually cut the hairs off down to the handle and then I use a forstner bit in my drill press. It's important to have the brush handle clamped tightly and level. Kind of a tricky operatio...

Shaving Brush Knots

Hello Folks, It's been awhile since I've posted. Things have been busy but I hope to start making brushes again soon. In the meantime, for those of you who would like to make your own brush, or replace the knot in a current brush, I have for sale, some very nice 24mm x 60mm slivertip knots. These kn...

Well, I actually mentioned another possible source that I had a stake in. I edited it out to clean it up.

Thanks for the clarification, Dan! I know you want to do the right thing.

hmmmmmm... is it "spam" when a member refers another member to a third party vendor?

Dan, I certainly appreciate the plug and it appears to me you were trying to help the poster, but I somehow feel guilty that you were rebuked for doing it!

I know that for a fact, because I know one maker who tried like hell to get bristle of the same type as, say, Simpson Manchurian, and was unable to do so, when all was said and done. I also know one who said he "had them on order". I wonder if it's the same guy. I've never been willing to...

In the spirit of sharing first-hand data... In today's global marketplace, anyone has access to shaving brush knots manufactured by the same factories that supply the big name brands. It's simply a matter of affording the minimum order required (sometimes as many as 1500 knots). Please say it isn't ...

Hang in there Dan. The feedback will come and you'll build a trust on SMF.

There are many fine members here that would be willing to try out your brushes and give you honest feedback.

BTW, and I speak from experience, it's not just the knot, it's how you set it in the handle.

Good Luck!

Of the materials Ive seen so far, Id be interested in either horn or that wood in the in your orignal post..., the one with the really pronounced contrast. Ah... the black and white ebony! Very nice wood and very dense. I have some and if you'd like a custom brush we can work out the details in PM....

What materials do you have available now, Pete?
I should have any of the materials that you've seen and a few more. What did you have in mind?

Well, then how is a new seller suppose to get their feedback score increased if no one will risk buying from them in the early stages? There are two types of people in the world (I know, people who think there are two types of people and those who don't). Type 1... Those who trust strangers until t...

Some New Handles

Friday I drove up to Meriden, CT to a company called Masecraft to look over handle materials for our brushes. This is the company that manufactures the alternative Ivory I've used for a few handles. It turns out that they supply many of the inlay materials for guitar manufacturers and knife scale ma...

I can make something with one of those or one of the other knots (24mm - Best and Silvertip) I expect to arrive today or tomorrow. Why don't you PM me and we can work out details so ...
