Re: Recommend Me Razors

I love the Gillette Red Tip. It was designed to tackle heavy beards, which it does superbly; however, I do not find it in the least harsh or aggressive. I stumbled across this beautifully refurbished one: http://www.deltaechorazors.com/product/b1-gillette-red-tip-the-executive Of course, you can eas...

Re: Curmudgeonly Skepticism of Accepted Wisdom

You're right, I wasn't calling any member a 'broad' for then I would have to ban myself. If you are right about electric wetshaving being the best, then, dinosaur that I am, I shall have to go without the experience. True happiness, said the sage, is being content with what you have. Is electric we...

Re: Curmudgeonly Skepticism of Accepted Wisdom

SMF isn't for discussion of the latter (don't quibble about wetshaving including waterproof electrics, which remind me of Churchill's question "But what if our child had my looks and your brains?" - a combination of the worst of both worlds rather than the best). Or maybe wet electric is ...

Re: Curmudgeonly Skepticism of Accepted Wisdom

Murray, we're having a great exchange in this thread, and not even the teeniest, tiniest offense could possibly be taken by any of your remarks. Likewise, I hope nobody read my original posting as accusing anyone in particular(certainly nobody at SMF) of being a "lemming." I just find that...

Re: Curmudgeonly Skepticism of Accepted Wisdom

2. Blade vs. Electric. I have long asserted that I transitioned from electric back to traditional wetshaves for the nostalgia of it, as I was perfectly happy with my electric shaves. My old Braun electric is over ten years old (from before the self-cleaning models) and it still shaves me just as we...

Curmudgeonly Skepticism of Accepted Wisdom

Skewering a Few Sacred Cows I’ve been thinking lately that many of my own personal shaving experiences don’t comport at all with “accepted wisdom,” or what I’ll call “AW.” Not only SMF’s AW, but general wet-shaver wisdom. Here’s a few examples. 1. Multiple Pass shaving . A good number of men at SMF ...

Re: the blade vs. electric shaving

Sorry to bump my previous posting but I thought of a couple of supplementary points: 1) For those of us with facial hair (moustaches, sideburns, goatees, whatever), it's very helpful to have a trimmer right there in your hand while shaving. Of course, with blade shaving you can always pick up a trim...

Oh dear, oh dear. Most distressing. Might I suggest, in the interests of restoring equanimity, that this posting simply be deleted and the whole dismal episode consigned to the River Lethe?

Re: the blade vs. electric shaving

Personal preference. Approximately 1/4 of men prefer electric, for a variety of reasons. Many men find them faster. They certainly aren't going to nick or cut you. As an alternative to $4/blade cartridges, many men find them economical. Older gents with unsteady hands often favor electric over blade...

QED . . . results vary by individual. Personal trial-and-error would appear to be the only path forward!

Re: the blade vs. electric shaving

As with all these questions about what gives the "best" shave, everyone has a different opinion. I've only got one "fact" about different razors / shaving methods to share: all razors and electrics cut beard hair well enough to prevent men from growing a beard. Straight-razor, Si...

Re: Kai Double Edge Blades

I haven't used Kai extensively enough to have an opinion on the longevity/durability of the blade. For me personally, however, I felt that Kai blades had a bit too much "bite" for my face -- yes, something like my experience with Feather blades. Kai blades are certainly well-respected, and...

Seems to be the same question you asked in your posting of May 28th. I've cut-and-pasted in the same answer I gave then, since it appears to be the same inquiry. --- Welcome to SMF, and thank you for your question. The idea that more blades = closer shave has been carefully cultivated by the razor i...

Re: merkur

Which razor is "best" is 100% a matter of personal opinion. Many, many men love Merkur; others (myself included), prefer vintage Gillettes. And, in 2016, there are now numerous other DE companies producing a wide variety of fine DE razors. Nobody can make a definitive statement as to which...

Re: Fourth DE shave in the shower...

I almost never shave in the shower. However, if I did, I think I could do as well with the double-edge as with a cartridge. For me there are a few insurmountable problems inherent in shaving in the shower: first, the shower seems to rinse away all the lather long before I am finished; second, I neve...

Re: fusion proglide power with flexball

well let me ask you this then, will a cheap triple blade disposable razor give a closer shave than a double edge safety razor like from the 50s made by merkur and if so, how and why? if that very same merkur will give a better but not closer shave, how and why???? rsvp. In my personal opinion the c...

Re: fusion proglide power with flexball

I probably should have said that most men in Europe and North America use cartridges. I understand that, world-wide, there is still a major market for Double-edge razor blades, particularly among the less wealthy nations, where the cost of shaving with an expensive cartridge razor hits a family's bu...

dont know whom to believe when it comes to system razors and disposable ones and people saying more blades mean a closer shave! Welcome to SMF, and thank you for your question. The idea that more blades = closer shave has been carefully cultivated by the razor industry, but I'm not aware of any sci...
