Gary: That's why they do it. I am that way on books. I read a review and look up the book, impulsively order it and then often find when I receive it
that it is not as good as the review was.

Re: GILLETTE FUSION $1/WK
Gary: When people in the ad industry began to think they were exceptionally clever and the public they were creating advertising for was exceptionally dumb, David Ogilvy, for whom I once worked, told them "the consumer is not a moron, she's your wife." It applies to wet shavers, too. cheer...

Re: GILLETTE FUSION $1/WK
Brutus, Squire: in advertising, it is a cliché that the smartest and the brightest are bunched in with the dumbest and dullest so some part of all advertising money is pissed away because it reaches the wrong target markets. The trick is not wasting any more money than necessary to move your product...

Re: GILLETTE FUSION $1/WK
Gil, Chris: Thanks. I looked at the ad and I can't believe Gillette would do this or what the marketing rational behind it is. They are certainly not improving their relationship with the retailers who make them successful unless they are offering special inducements to retailers to replace lost ret...

Re: GILLETTE FUSION $1/WK
Gil: where did you see this ad? It makes no sense to me and I can't see it making any sense for Gillette. I don't doubt your word but it goes against all marketing propositions. I am curious because any blade company wants you to shave more, not less.

Re: Introducing the MdC Fougere Brain Bowl
Gary: You write: "Prediction: this bowl of MdC Fougere soap will last until approximately April 18, 2015, provided I continue to use the same brush (Plisson), and shave every single day between now and then. This is based on an average usage of 1.15 grams per day, which represents the amount of...

Re: tapatalk and shave my face
Thanks for the kind words Gary. I found it interesting that there is a word to describe what I am. And I do like trying some new things because often they are a real improvement over older versions or older products manufactured by others. Sometimes I buy "dogs" but I have been around long...

Re: The Razors and Blades Myth
Gary: if Fusion is doing this it is likely defensive marketing to keep some Fusion cartridge buyers from migrating to other cartridges. However, I doubt that Gillette will put much behind it because Gillette has better brand equity in drug stores and other outlets selling similar products than any o...

Re: tapatalk and shave my face
I am seemingly the outlier here because I have an iPhone6, an iPad, and a desktop computer with enough memory to outlast me. I don't count the old laptop I never use that I bought when we were going to Florida regularly and I wanted to be in touch with clients or friends. My wife has a cell phone an...

Re: The Razors and Blades Myth
Thanks Chris, I enjoyed this. I found it a very perceptive business school-type analysis that is short (admittedly so in the article) on the significance of the performance of the product and the likely perception that it was the best on the market because of its price, both critical marketing facto...
Re: Scuttle
Until I heard about the Moss Scuttle on SMF the only scuttle I knew about was what crabs do across the sand. That was my loss for many decades because the MS has made my shaving more pleasant than anything else I have learned on SMF. I love it!

Pete: Harry's is a shave products company that is advertising almost solely on the Internet via the New York Times, other sites. As was noted everything about the company is excellent but the efficacy of their blades. I bought a starter kit because the advertising was exceptional and the product ......

an orgy of questions
I am personally curious about the shaving habits of SMF members so I am tossing out a number of random questions off the top of my head. This is not a survey for anyone but I thought some of us might be interested in how SMF members answer them ... if members do respond. So, answer any of them you c...

Re: Gillette Pivot Ball Razor - Stop The Insanity Already
Porter: Your post caused me to get out an old can of Gillette Fusion gel ... at least 5 years old I would suspect ... and use it this morning. Now, I am not going to go back to using canned shave stuff of any kind for any reason that I can think of but I didn't find the gel as bad as you did. I got ...

Re: Gillette Pivot Ball Razor - Stop The Insanity Already
Wendell, I have seen corporations do some incredibly silly things for what they think are logical reasons. I have also seen some do very logical things for very silly reasons. And while I can't really support this off the top of my head ... but some of the big bank problems tell me I am right ... I'...

Re: Gillette Pivot Ball Razor - Stop The Insanity Already
Wendell, isn't driving profits legally the purpose of a corporation? I see nothing wrong with that. I think they are pretty astute ... pushing brand names and not P&G the same as Unilever does. I have never had anything to do with P&G other than buying their products.
