I put a skinny Weber handle on mine. The Ikon bulldog handle just didn't do it for me.

I'll state that I am one of those "shave with a claw hammer and WD-30" gents as far as beard and skin go. I really crave the ultimate cool in summertime. Perhaps having lived through heat stroke has something to do with it. Either way, I also added a mix of crystals and the PPG solution to...

Chillin' the most

I recently bought some Vostok from Queen Charlotte Soaps in search of the most chilling summertime shave. It was cool, but I wanted more. An Amazon order later, I dissolved seven heaping teaspoons of pure menthol crystals in 50ml of warm propolyene glycol. A teaspoon of that mixture transformed half...

At least the vibrator was in the razor. :? I swear that the Gem 1912 is designed to magnify the sounds of whiskers shearing. Over twelve hours now w/o stubble from the aforementioned razor.

I put a decent DE (new R41) or SE (Gem 1912) in my checked luggage. Never had a problem. All things being equal, I'd rather drive eleven hours than fly for five. The TSA is security theater, like a modern Keystone Kops, but not as entertaining.

Nice find. I've got three of the four pictured razors. Of those, the 1912 gives me the closest shave.

FWIW, the Weber handle is great with the R41 head. Nice grippy knurling on the stainless steel.

If you want a close 1-2 pass shave with a DE, consider the new Muhle R41 tooth comb. It gives an almost str8 shave with the right blade. I love mine, but it puts a premium on technique and prep. A great razor if your shave-fu is strong.

Great review. I haven't tried a Damaskeene yet, but the two 1912s I tried rivaled the Muhle R41 in closeness. The Junior that I tried (not 1912 stamped) was unbearably mild. It appears that there might be some variations in the Junior line.

He was a writer who happened to was able to speak on television. One of the few whom you could feel comfortable with. The late Charles Kuralt was another.

I like the Dogfish Head 60 and 90 minute IPAs, but the 120 minute lacks balance. Closer to home, the Brau Brothers put out a nice seasonal fresh hopped offering that is well worth buying (if only I could remember the name of the brew).

Given modern marketing, you can be sure that any perceived difference would be emphasized as an asset. "Lubricated with pure organic hummingbird earwax" or some such drivel.

I would actually prefer one of the old brass and leather barber chairs to that one. The last one I saw around here went for 3 large, and the leather needed replacing. I'd still like one of the brass/leather ones though.

I don't know about Argentina, but mate was available and consumed in Montevideo back in the sixties, and not just by gauchos.

The R41 has replaced my Fatboy as my traveling razor. The shaves are awesomely close, but it is very unforgiving of anything less than perfect technique. I prefer one of my 1912 Gems for that level of closeness, but the Muhle has it's place.

I personally find that either one of my 1912s is more aggressive than my MM, and a match for my Muhle R41. The Gems are a bit more forgiving than the Muhle, though.

I would rate my Gem 1912 as more aggressive than my Micromatic, but I only have the one Micromatic vs two of the earlier models.

A recent test drive of a prototype DE.

My barber (Troy) is working on his own midwest shaving empire. Among other things, he's developing his own DE razors, and asked me to to test an 'aggressive' razor prototype for him. I took no pictures due to confidentiality concerns. The razor is a three piece open comb DE. Handle is a magnificent ...

Dale,
The new R41 likes Astra SP blades just fine. I can't imagine that even a Feather would shave any better in this thing.

That's a pretty ingenious design. I think I'd stick to my NOS Travalong though, if I'm that pressed for space.
