My first safety razor was a Merkur adjustable - the Vision. I now have far too many safety razors. In my opinion it doesn't make a lot of difference what you start with. Until you have developed a technique you will not really know what is suitable for you. Go with your instinct now, and if your wif...

I agree that 'excellent' might be stretching it a bit, but at least there were plenty of photos to enable one to form a view on this. This is actually quite a good description compared to some of the drivel-with-a-grainy-photo listings that are to be found on that site. Some Fat Boys in worse condit...

Kirkawall, thanks for your reply. I wonder if you could say how you are cleaning yours? I have just used shampoo and some soap scum remover, and I have been reluctant to use anything else for fear of ruining the gold plating. I do have some Brasso and Maas, but wonder if these would be too harsh. An...

old Gillette repair advice please

I recently bought an old Gillette razor (1909 Pocket Edition) and one outer tooth on each side of the guard is bent inwards. I wondered whether it was advisable to try to bend them back or is it better to leave alone? Has anyone tried and succeeded or tried and failed, and how did you do it? Thank y...

I know it looks in good condition, and comes with one of the nicer cases, but that price is a bit silly. I seem to remember mine - which is in excellent condition - costing about $20 including shipping to the UK, and that was just earlier this year. I have been looking on ebay for an (English) Arist...

Found another picture. Looks like this one has some sort of attachment to convert it to a cut-throat razor?

Thanks for those replies. That thing looks pretty scary. Has anyone tried shaving with it? As they are so cheap I suppose it wouldn't hurt having a go... (or perhaps it would hurt!)

Curious about blades...

These double-edged blades were in the box with a Gillette NEW that I got from ebay. I am just curious to know what sort of razor they are for. On one side of each blade it says: "DURHAM DUPLEX" and "SHEFFIELD ENGLAND". The blades are 57mm long. Any ideas? http://upload8.postimage...

I tried the travel razor (1963 US) head with an (English) Tech handle and found I was forcing it so stopped. A (US) Gillette NEW handle fitted OK. I tried one of Merkur’s three-piece handles and it was a perfect fit! I also tried the Merkur handle on a Gillette NEW (English) head and it fitted fine:...

Yes, it is etched, though I have seen the impressed ones like yours for sale as well. Is it OK to use the old Gilette blades? The plastic outer wrapper is still intact. Failing that, I will just slip one of my Derby blades in.

I bought one of these travel Gillettes from ebay just because it looked quite cute. After what you have said I shall try shaving with it. :)
