Re: Sharpening Kitchen Knives

I also use a honing rod - my grandfather is a retired master butcher so he taught me how to use it properly. A few months ago I got in the habit of using the rod each time before using the knives. I've been amazed just how much sharper and therefore useable the knives are as a result. I tend to use ...

Re: Cobra Conversion

Chris, really interesting to read this thread.

I must confess almost complete ignorance when it comes to these types of razors. What are the main differences and benefits over using a DE (aside from the single blade edge, of course).

Thanks Clive - I think I remember it now. I seem to recall it being a pretty good brush actually.

Such a shame that Rooney aren't around any more...

Re: The state of the current English Shaving soaps

Gary, I agree with you regarding the staff at GFT. Whenever I visit the Curzon Street shop i find the staff standoffish and not terribly helpful. On the other hand, the staff at the TOBS Jermyn Street store couldn’t be more engaged and helpful. Trumper's has always a bit this way, particularly in t...

Was this the one that was made by Rooney? I think I had one, but just can't picture it.

We still use good old Imperial Leather in this house.

I used to use Trumper's Pomade and I am considering buying it again when I visit Curzon Street next month.

If I remember correctly it has a lovely rose scent.

Ahh.....The British Curry.....which bears absolutely no resemblance or relation to a real curry!

Re: Gillette Scores an own goal

The problem with things like this is that they actually don't help the cause they're intending. The behaviour Gillette depicts represents only a small sub-set of men that absolutely needs excising, but it certainly isn't representative of all or, in my experience most men. And actually, I think most...

Olle, no you wouldn't be going back far enough with that style of bottle. That design and formulation was around when I first got involved with all this in 2007. My current 30ml bottle which I save for special occasions and have had about 5 years is like this. I did once have an older bottle like th...

Ira, I use a blade 4 or 5 times then toss them. No point in my opinion taking it too far and risking a sub-par shave with the associated irritation. They’re cheap enough after all.

Re: A Blast From The Past

Hi Chris, a really entertaining post and quite timely as for some reason I was thinking about this very cream only the other day. I never tried it actually, and I think CT stopped selling it around the time I started shaving with a brush. Was it available in the UK because I used to buy their shirts...

Re: A Self Review

Interesting first post Ira and I couldn’t agree more with the advice you give. Learning to shave with a DE (and a straight too, I’m sure) IS quite a zen-like process. It takes patience and experience for sure. I particularly agree with your ‘short strokes’ advice, and that’s something I don’t think ...

I say abandon and nuke it.

There’s a few old gems in there (DrP’s brush collection for example) that I still like to look at, but that’s it.

Thanks Vince.

I don’t look beyond SMF but this is both hugely embarrassing on the part of the owner, and incredibly underhand on the part of the domain poacher.

I hope they get it sorted (if they can).
