Re: 15 years ago today

Wow - what a blast from the past! That’s the video that got me started and eventually led to SMF.

Re: WTB - “14” Straights

I’m still looking to add to my collection of 14s, something a little less common than a Fili Doble Temple. I can offer this W&B FBU as a trade. She’s in excellent shape.

Contact me to make a trade or outright purchase agreeable to both.

I agree Gary. I think she’s an early model Fili. A previous owner used her well but there’s enough left to enjoy the lines and the shave. I like a razor with a little character.

Re: WTB - “14” Straights

Hi Chris I have a few razors that are labeled “14”. Filarmonica, Guillermo Hoppe, Le Grelot, and Vierblatt. They are all very hollow blades at or near 8/8 and I’ve had others that were 6/8 and as small as 5/8. I find the size 14 at 8/8 to be just the right weight and shape - the perfect blend of sto...

Re: Cleaning a suede strop

That’s a good point - sometimes the best thing to do is nothing. I really do not want to change the draw on this strop. It’s like velvet. I couldn’t get used to it a first but I’ve used it so long now that canvas feels like 60 grit.

Cleaning a suede strop

My Kanayama suede strop picked up a water stain. I was thinking of cleaning it with saddle soap but that means more water and I don’t want to just make it a bigger stain. Anybody fixed a similar problem?

Re: WTT Heljestrand MK33

Hi Gary From my research the 14 designator is a moving target. I don’t know who it originated with but I think you could be on the right track with 14/16. But I’ve seen 14s that measured as small as 5/8 and as big as 8/8, from different makers of course. In any case I agree the MK33 is a special raz...

Also, I'm open to including some cash for the right deal.

Re: An Interesting Razor: Spear Wedge

That razor has tons of character. The size, logo, and scales all work and the obvious use add to the cool factor. The outlines match similar Gencos and other makers. I wonder if these were mass produced and then tailored to meet a dealers spec?

Re: Why the bias against pastes?

Hi Iv'e noticed on a lot of forums there is a bias of using stropping pastes in razor honing. I have used them for decades and find them an essential tool in the kit. Does anyone know the genesis of this aversion? Thanks My theory is that pastes have no vibe. Plus, anybody that laid out $300+ on a ...

I've used a Nespresso for a couple years now. I like it for the convenience and as long as I use it as it's intended. I like my coffee strong and black. The Nespresso pods make a fine cup but it's limited to a small espresso cup. Anything larger gets diluted, as you say. Plus, it get rather pricey f...

Good video. I rarely have occasion to call for a Mai Tai and now I know that the few times I have had one, it wasn't. Looks complicated to get right so the bartender has to know what he's doing, which eliminates most. Mojitos are the happening thing nowadays and I've been mostly underwhelmed. Beer, ...
