I am a graduate student in microbiology who is 6 short months away from my Ph.D. All of the information I have read so far is correct. 1) UV will kill most everything it come in direct contact with. I'm almost sure it would not effectively sterilize the inards of a shave brush. It should work fine f...

Randy, that's good to know. It makes me wonder what I've been doing with various implements before I use them. For instance, if I need to use a needle to dislodge a pesky ingrown hair, I've assumed that simply spraying it with alcohol and wiping off the excess was sufficient. Ditto with oral thermo...

Most barbers are using barbicide or some other anti-microbial compound that is suspended in solution. In this case, the instruments only need to be suspended in the appropriate solution for the correct amount of time and the bacteria and viruses are effectively destroyed. Alcohol is a different thin...

P.S. When buying alcohol, make sure you check the percentage. Try for 90% or above, as that will have the highest anti-microbial power. I would avoid something in the 70% range. I'm a microbiologist and studies have shown that 70% alcohol is just as if not more effective than higher percentages of ...

That kind of scared me.
You shouldn't be scared....just be proactive and request a shave by Mr. Gill himself. It doesn't excuse the salesman not warning me about blood running down my face, but I definitely received a shave from someone who had little to no experience.

Yes, on a brush purchased just last week. But as I said, most of the barbed hairs are on the outside of the brush and not the middle. I didn't really notice this effect till a couple of days ago--once the brush began to bloom somewhat.

This is an interesting topic. I've recently purchased a Simpsons Chubby 1 in Super and I noticed some of the barbed hair. I at first thought maybe I was using too hot of water, but I don't used boiling water to soak my brush in--I just use hot tap water. I find that in my Simpsons brush that the bar...

The shop is an incredible place to visit. It has lots of antique barbershop itmes, my favorite was an old "Help Needed. Irish Need Not Apply" sign. Very reminiscent of the 1800's. The front room of the store is full of creams and such from some of the various retailers (T&H. Trumper, C...

Tye, as far as brushless shave creams go, it is one of the best I have ever used. I only use it when shaving in the shower though. It is even better if you use the cream with a brush, but you really have to work the cream to get a nice lather. I always have a tube of this stuff sitting around for th...

Thanks for the replies. I really like the look of the vision, but as mentioned before I already have a futur. As per Chris Fisher's suggestion I've looked at the EJ razors and they are beautiful. I'm pretty sure I'll be getting the EJ Chatsworth Ebony handle...gorgeous piece of work, but not to worr...

Trumper DE Razor or Merkur Vision

My birthday is rolling around and my girlfriend is going to buy me a razor. I currently own a Merkur Futur and have been looking at the DE razor's by Trumper and the Merkur Vision. Does anyone have experience with both of these razors that could offer me any help here. If you have not used both razo...

Gunky,
The Kiehl's Rare Earth facial Mask is one of the best products available in my opinion. I've tried other masks, but I always go back to the Kiehl's. I've never tried the QED green french clay though.

I've recently tried Classic's Lime/Coconut scented shave soap. It has a wonderful scent and can provides a good shave with no irritation for me. I did find, however, that it takes a bit more work with a brush to get a good lather than it does with say T&H or Trumper's Shave soaps.

Best description that I can give is that it has a very "clean" smell to it. A very nice and distinguished scent. The cream also provides one hell of a good shave.
