Re: Ancient North American cultures

It didn't have to be safe--just less dangerous than the alternative.

Re: 'Website not secure' notification

There is a free ssl certification available from the Electronic Freedom Foundation (EFF) via . You need root access to the web server to install it, but I have been using it for a couple years without incident. To redirect all traffic to https, you add a 301 redirect to the Apache or...

Re: Spam?

I made spam musubi not too long ago. You marinade the spam in soy sauce, then pan fry it and wrap it in nori and rice like sushi. It got mixed reviews, but I know some people who love it.

L'Occitane Cade Soap & Bowl for $30/FS with coupon

It comes with a beauty kit, so if your SWMBO asks what arrived you can distract her from the modest expense.,82,1,29221,939155.htm The coupon code is BEST17, and it is $10 off $35 and free shipping, so it will work on non-cade--and even non-shaving--items. '...

Re: Comment on using up products

I still have the tail end of my first tube of Proraso from 2007 or so! Right now I am trying to finish off the C&E Sandalwood soap that I bought shortly thereafter (I have a Trumpers Sandalwood waiting in the wings). I'm also pretty close to finishing off an Arco stick and some "White Tea" eShave cr...

Re: Wade & Butcher back in business

My initial reaction was B.S. as well. My suspicion is that a bunch of investors wanted to get into the straight razor market, looked for a tweedy, upmarket name, and bought the rights to use "Wade & Butcher." Maybe they will use the old designs, or the old foundry (though this page indicates the cap...

Pretty good deals from ShopLondons.

Shop is having a warehouse moving sale. Shipping is still $7 unless you get to $99 (in which case it is free). Their everyday sort of crappy $5 off coupon does work with the sale items. The GFTrumper selection is not great, but Sandalwood soap in the bowl is $13. I opted not to buy Rose...

Re: French Press coffee maker

My chief complaint against the Aeropress was that it didn't make enough coffee. So if you just want a little, that is the way to go. I left mine disused for a time and the plunger dried out and they will replace any part for $5—which they say is to cover shipping.<p>A friend recently got me a vacuum...

Re: Alpa Fougere Eau de Cologne

I am necro-posting to put my reassessment close to my initial disappointment. I now have both English Fern and Alpa, and while no one would mistake one for the other, Alpa does smell nice and some days (like today) I am glad to have Alpa in rotation..

Close-ups of knife sharpening

This Make Magazine article has interesting photos of a knife being sharpened. The magnification is not as high as Squire's posts, but the photos are put into gifs so you can see the light play off the edge. The article also has close-ups of the stones used, though these are almost useless (maybe on...

Re: What are you reading?

I just finished How I Conquered Your Planet by John Swartzwelder. It isn't great, but it takes genius to write what amounts to a three stooges a novella (with no stooges).

I recently read "The Emperor of Scent" and I found the description of oud very intriguing, despite having thought that my sample of Black Oud smelled like an antiseptic. Does oud suggest an antiseptic to you, or was that the scent/my nose?

Re: More than a week since last post here. Where is everyone

Though I seldom visit this forum, this is the only forum I visit. I think SMF is too much of an institution to have last legs as such: it would become a museum of shaving knowledge. At the moment it is merely a bit like the Diogenes Club, which has its own appeal, I suppose.

Re: Self sharpening 2,000 shave razor? THOUGHTS?!

The product they are offering does not make economic sense. Most likely they are producing an intereslyingly inferior product, but maybe a freshly ground uncoated SS blade really does give a superior shave that justifies the price. I recall that Kav once suggested the possibility of shaving with obs...

I think the equivalent is Aqua di Parma (or vice versa). Some time ago I asked a vendor if there was a replacement in the works, and he did not know.

Re: Etiquette and the modern day

There are few things that so touch us with instinctive revulsion as a breach of decorum; and so far have we progressed in the direction of imputing intrinsic utility to the ceremonial observances of etiquette that few of us, if any, can dissociate an offence against etiquette from a sense of the su...

Re: Linux

I've been using Linux for 10 years now. Right now I run OpenSuse and KDE. It is very customizable, which us great for me, but bad for elderly parents and those who provide them tech support. I think there is a kiosk mode that would lock down pretty well, but Gnome is fairly kiosky already IMHO.
