Re: Vetiver

Sam, as you know, I've been round and round on the vetiver merry-go-round. I have loved many but stuck with a few. Givenchy was reformulated, and the longevity is awful. The deep, nutty base note is virtually nonexistent. As you know, I love Vettiveru, but if longevity is no good on you, then maybe ...

Re: What's in the box?

Clive, I bought a couple of the Salter cakes as well. I love that scent and want a usable soap with it. I also don't need more stuff in the box, especially since I have a couple of kilos of unsoaped stearic acid and a bucket of tallow in the fridge...I am weak.

Good to see wetshaving gear on the shelf, although it's a bummer that the budget stuff is vanishing as this stuff shows up. Is that a badger brush?

Re: "That Lather"

Good point, Chris. Not everyone is a two or three-pass shaver. It was made as a budget item for daily use by the average guy, like Barbasol or Williams mug soap, but it's just a lot better than those. I used it today. I had to dose additional water a couple of times during the initial lather and the...

Re: "That Lather"

Here's a question: did Vitos get gummy? It's the only other soap I can think of that has hydrogenated tallow in it. Couple of things I've been thinking about that could be causing the gummy factor. Gary, you've used Vitos a bunch. Chris Moss, you've used everything. Is there anything else that gets ...

Re: "That Lather"

Chris, The dryer sheet thing sometimes bothers me. It's like this great fougere scent, a little fresh, a little piney, and then the musk in the base of the fragrance comes through, and it's a weird "clean" musk that doesn't work with the rest of the scent that well. Some days it's really in your fac...

Re: In Praise of the Ordinary Razor

Murray, Thanks for that explanation of the Mergress vs. the Gillette adjustables. I did enjoy my long-handled adjustable for quite a while, but I think things were smoother for me with the Mergress. The distinction between changing only the angle and changing the head geometry is likely one reason w...

I'm honored, guys.

And I'll wear the moniker Soapgeek with some measure of pride (and some measure of sheepishness).

Used that Salter soap again today. I hope somewhere Gordon did, too. Classic scent, classic performance.

Re: In Praise of the Ordinary Razor

Thanks for the feedback, Murray et al.

I expect it'll be a great razor for me. I also see the benefit of having access to milder or more aggressive shaves as needed, and in the end, I have to admit I just like trying new shave gear.

Re: Vetiver

The soap is a good match for the aftershave. Fine outsources the soap from a European firm, and the story goes that the founder spent a good bit of time and money chasing down the supplier of Tabac's base. Whether the soaps are identical bases is up for debate, but they are really similar.

Re: In Praise of the Ordinary Razor

Tim, if you are considering the aluminum version of the General, you might also consider the chrome version of the Rockwell (6C). It is half the price and the functional equal of the stainless steel version (6S) and I would judge the finish to be on par with the Edwin Jagger. I'm sometimes tempted ...

Re: Vetiver

John, nothing against the artisans, but for hard water like you described over at B&B, I might suggest Fine Green Vetiver. The soap is Tabac's base, which lathers anywhere (mineral chelators!), and the scent is a close match for Guerlain Vetiver. It's hard-milled, so lasts forever, and it's affordab...

Re: In Praise of the Ordinary Razor

Well, Gene, something to think about. I suppose I will get the aluminum version of the General to try when it is available again. $100 for a total unknown is hard to do for me. I will check out the site and get samples of the various blades. So many cool things available to try and ways to try them ...
