Re: Revisiting the house of Hermes - the older stuff

I hear you, Sam. Skin chemistry makes a big difference. Bel ami is one of the all-time greats IMO.

Hove Diverti

Hove is a very old-school and cool perfumer in New Orleans. Located in the French Quarter, it is a cozy little shop with a lovely staff and a very interesting assortment of independently-produced scents. http://www.hoveparfumeur.com/default.htm Hove has been on my radar almost since I started wetsha...

Re: Revisiting the house of Hermes - the older stuff

Bel Ami and the Vetiver flanker are good, although the vintage Bel Ami is really quite something. I like the Bel Ami Vetiver because it seems to have more depth but I enjoy both, although I have never sprung for a bottle of either. I prefer Equipage as leather is not a go-to note for me. Equipage ha...

Re: Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet Shaving Soap . . .

It is an addictive scent. I owned a puck of the tallowate version some years ago. Incredible. Am I understanding correctly that the current stuff is good again? I will purchase a puck post-haste if it's worth using these days.

Re: Speick Soap Stick

Very true, Murray. My nose doesn't do well with Speick sometimes, and I don't really have a particularly sensitive olfactory. Also, yes, did not mean to downplay the performance of the artisan soaps. Many of them are world class. I am proud of the soap I made. And yet, when I lather Valobra or Palmo...

Re: Speick Soap Stick

nav, I agree. This is an outstanding soap, and along with Palmolive, Valobra, and Tabac, ranks in the top tier IMO. Artisan soaps: many are wonderful, most are at least as good as the old British soaps if not better, and the scent variety is dazzling. I think the last point - and the novelty of new ...

Re: Rolling My Own

Make a shave soap with a fairly low amount of superfat, say 2-3%. Use mostly KOH with only a touch of NaOH if any. After the hot process cook, add glycerin, melted stearic acid, and perhaps a small amount of additional superfat, although if you do add superfat, I recommend palm kernel oil or coconut...

Re: Tim's Soap - so long

Hey guys, checking in here as I haven't been around much. I put the soap business on the back burner as it was eating me alive. I have a 4-year-old, a 7-year-old, a full-time job, and other hobbies/interests. All of these things were suffering, as were my health and sanity. Indeed, there were days I...

Re: Why Synthetic?

Synthetics are traditional. I have the nylon brush that belonged to my grandfather some 50 years ago. It is a piece of junk, but it was sold for shaving. The current badger hair is nothing like what was available even 10 years ago, let alone 2-3 decades. So, in all honesty, a synthetic with the newe...

Re: AOS question

Potassium salts (e.g. potassium palmitate) are generally more water soluble than sodium salts (e.g. sodium palmitate). All things being equal, potassium salts will lather more readily, which is why potassium hydroxide is often used in shave soap. Palmitate is saponified palmitic acid, which operates...

Re: Eucris in all its glory

I have to commend Trumper for taking a risk with Eucris. Currant and fig were the two frontrunners for new odd fruit note to stick in every fragrance. Fig won. Trumper didn't wait for the race to end, though, and tried to get in front of things. Eucris is an earthier, edgier take on currant than mos...

Re: Pinaud Clubman

Good point, Squire. That said, Clubman is a fougere with a decidedly barbershop aspect. To me, this means geranium and a powdery sweetness laid over the traditional lavender-oakmoss-coumarin accord. There is a big geranium note, a waxy aldehyde sheen surrounding the lavender, and the powdery finish ...

Re: What bath soap are you using right now?

Nancy Boy is fine stuff, Gary. I'm fond of the Blossomwood and especially the Sweetgrass myself. I've been using up an EO soap I made - lavender, cedar, and patchouli with some accents. I've also been rotating through a bunch of soaps I acquired in a swap on a soapmaking board. 15 of us contributed ...
