Re: Miniscus tear and surgery

Sam, Very best wishes. I am on consultation number three tomorrow for my right knee. I wish I could say I injured it doing something heroic, but I think it is just years of sports wear and tear catching up. I'm meeting with our university's sports physician, and I'm hoping for an answer. I can barel...

Bath House Scents

I recently picked up a bottle of Bath House Spanish Fig & Nutmeg at Merz in Chicago. It's very reasonably priced and very pleasant. Any thoughts on the line of scents or any of the scents in particular?

Metal detecting

I bought my son a pretty high end metal detector because of his varied interests as a middle schooler. I have to admit that I am pretty excited about exploring with him. We have explored many, many related websites which all have the kinds of basic information you would expect (e.g., always ask perm...

Re: What are you reading?

Just finished reading a stack of dissertation proposals, so now on to the summer must-read list: East of Eden (ashamed to say I never read it); Zen in the Art of Archery (ditto); and Gone to Ground, a memoir of a Jewish woman who lived in Germany throughout WWII. I would highly recommend Tinseltown ...

Re: Etiquette and the modern day

About a year ago, I took my son to get a haircut, and the fellow in the barber chair talked on his cell phone through the entire haircut. The barber kept rolling his eyes and shaking his head, and those of us waiting in line wanted to bounce the guy out on his ear. . . As a college professor, I have...

I have a few Cross pen/pencil sets, but, like several others, they are just too thin. I have used Parker pens (fountain pens & rollerballs) for a number of years. But I'd have to say that my favorite pen is the Waterman Carene. I bought mine about twelve years ago, so I don't know if they're eve...

Last spring I was in Monterey, CA, and had some sardines fresh from the bay. They were pricey and touristy, but I enjoyed the freshness of the grilled sardines.

I am a fan of sardines in mustard sauce these days.

Finally pulled the trigger on Sartorial

After sampling it a few times, I finally bought my first bottle of Penhaligon's, and it has not disappointed. I have received raves from family and friends (particularly my teenage daughter, which is the ultimate approval.) Interestingly, I sprayed a little on each wrist and asked my sister to take ...

Many thanks to changabang, who came through in a BIG way! Came home from a conference in Korea, and there was a shiny Atra waiting for me in the mail. The highlight of my summer so far.

JT -- What cartridges have you been using? Genuine Atras, or something else? This is a tough one. I use genuine Atras for the most part, but, every now and then, I'll use a generic. I always regret using the knock-off, but my budget doesn't always allow for the real deal. The knock-offs don't last ...

Re: Sad day for my Atra

Long story short. I have used the same Gillette Atra since 1982. It was a razor with quite a bit of sentimental attachment. We had a houseguest recently who knocked it off the shelf and damaged it irreparably.... Do they realize that your friendship can no longer ever be the same after this event? ...

Sad day for my Atra

Long story short. I have used the same Gillette Atra since 1982. It was a razor with quite a bit of sentimental attachment. We had a houseguest recently who knocked it off the shelf and damaged it irreparably. My wife told me to just run out and buy a new one. . . . Just though I'd share with some f...

Lasik vs PRK

I was evaluated for corrective surgery this morning and have decided to go through with it. A friend of mine has PRK rather than Lasik and is very happy with the results. I won't bore you with the differences between the procedures, but I am left wondering whether anyone here has opted for PRK over ...
