Re: New (?) Truefitt & Hill shaving cream

Own a tub. In-/post-shave performance is as good as (if not better than) expected from T&H, and the (slightly cologne-y) scent is complex, warmly woody, slightly peppery, yet bright and refreshing, in my view.

Re: Cremo Sandalwood Shaving Cream

Haven't tried it, but no major change in formulation (so far). Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Stearic Acid, Glycol Distearate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Fruit Extract, Carica Papaya Frui...

I echo the classic English brands; don't forget DRH.

Re: palm oil

I'm going to go check my soaps and creams to see if any of them list palm oil. It shouldn't take long. Edit, I'm back, didn't find any, but if anyone knows of any specific brands among the popularly discussed products that do, please let me know. I figure specificity is pretty much a basic requirem...

Are there no naturally clear/open terrains (versus deforested jungle) available for planting trees?

Re: palm oil

Murray, it's my understanding that - in some South American countries (e.g.: Ecuador) - there are (artificial) palm plantations devoid of mammals. Is that not the case?

Re: palm oil

Orangutans are native to Indonesia, Malaysia, and Africa, but not South America - where palm oil is also harvested.

I came across this interesting article, although I can't confirm its credibility (or lack thereof): http://ensia.com/features/can-latin-ame ... oil-right/

Yes, fortunately. :)
My personal favourite is No.88, but the (mild) scent of the Valobra stick is rather nice - better than their other (in-house) shaving soap scents, imo.

Re: Current state of hard soaps

Thanks for the breakdown, Gary! I see DRH more like a 7 or 8 though, but that’s just me. In any case, current DRH is nowhere near as good as earlier iterations, like when tallow was its first ingredient, or other soaps, such as, tallow formulation Trumper, Pen’s tallow, etc., imo. I’ve been getting ...

Re: Current state of hard soaps

These tallows (still) perform very well, IMO: D.R.Harris Czech&Speake (Valobra-made) Tabac Don't know that Harris has gone through a reformulation, but I do find them very, very good. DRH Sandalwood soap - which debuted at end of 2014 - contains tallow, but is a bit different from the rest of th...

Why would they change a Good thing?? Not sure whether that's just a rhetorical question, but I'm sure splitting profits with Valobra had something to do with it. It's amazing to me that a company does Not see when something isn't working and change it back. I think it's safe to presume purchases ha...

Re: Does size really matter

Though nowadays, I mainly use DEs (and occasionally Carts,) I used to use straights (pretty much) exclusively, for years on end. I found heavier straights more effective, for my thick facial hair (although the lighter/smaller straights, in some ways were a bit more nimble, in general). I liken the r...

Re: razor aggressiveness help

If we are to measure aggressiveness by sharpness Feather is unquestionably the sharpest of the bunch. Oddly enough they may also provide the best shave. That the Feather blade is particularly sharp, actually helps me, in terms of smoothness. Other (less sharp) blades, don't cut my thick facial hair...

Re: lathering agents

Sort of related...MWF is one of the only, if not the only shaving soap which includes Magnesium Sulfate.
This seems counterproductive, since chelators are used against hard water minerals such as Ca++ and Mg++.

Re: lathering agents

Would be interesting to attempt to understand why he thinks a chelator is a "lather improver" Oy vey. The theory behind the use of chelating/sequestering agents, is that without them, hard water (high calcium) may hinder a soap's cleaning/lathering potential. Reference: http://chemwiki.uc...
