Re: CURRENT TRUMPER'S VIOLET CREAM
I've been working on a pot of the Violet cream for several months now. I have no complaints about the lather or the scent. But in my opinion the Violet soap is the better choice - at least it is if Trumper's quality control is still adequate. The soap has a different, more complex and elegant fragr...

Re: GILLETTE FUSION $1/WK
I use a Fusion on my head, every day, 7 days a week, missing a shave very occasionally. A Fusion cartridge can last me weeks, if not months. Usually I find myself switching to a new cartridge out of curiosity more than too much deterioration in the head shave. I suspect I've been using my current c...

Re: Refrigerating an aftershave balm
That's a worthwhile thought, Squire. I did see a Mantic video on aftershaves in which he recommends refrigerating them, though he wasn't talking specifically about balms. As I think about it more, it's hard to see how refrigeration (as opposed to freezing) could harm such a product.

Refrigerating an aftershave balm
Gents, for the first time since I joined the forum, I've found a product with such superior skincare properties that I'm afraid it will be reformulated or discontinued. So I feel the need to stock up on it. I'm referring to The Gentlemen's Refinery aftershave balm. The company, based in Las Vegas, h...

Re: What's today's soap or cream?
Spanish Fig & Nutmeg soap by the Bath House. I use this every couple of weeks and never fail to be impressed by its superior performance. No 3T soap ever shaved better for me. The fruity fragrance is pleasant and not overpowering. It doesn't remind me of figs or nutmeg, however, but rather of Ju...

Re: Gillette Pivot Ball Razor - Stop The Insanity Already
On a recent trip to the beach, I brought along a travel can of Gillette gel instead of my normal shaving gear. Sure, it worked OK. But the heavy, greasy consistency, together with that dumbed-down "universal fragrance" that Gary mentions, left me disgusted after a few days. Yet this goopy ...

Re: Gillette Pivot Ball Razor - Stop The Insanity Already
Excellent post, Bob. My question is: why is the range of fragrances in American skincare/bathing consumables so narrow? Almost literally, everything sold at the drugstore smells the same. I just don't get it. Thank goodness we have the English and the French and the Germans and the Italians to provi...

Re: Gillette Pivot Ball Razor - Stop The Insanity Already
Another possible reason is that Gillette is committed to the aerosol dispenser, and it may not be feasible to reproduce the quality of a 3T cream in a can.

Re: Gillette Pivot Ball Razor - Stop The Insanity Already
But since people will pay the big bucks for cartridges, wouldn't they also pay more for a decent-smelling shave cream?

Re: Gillette Pivot Ball Razor - Stop The Insanity Already
I agree with Bob on all points. To me the greater mystery is why Gillette hasn't discovered the marketing potential of high-quality shaving creams like the ones we enjoy in this forum. Every aerosol product they have ever sold has the same vaguely minty or herbal fragrance, the same as 99% of all sh...

Re: Gillette Pivot Ball Razor - Stop The Insanity Already
That's a killer response, Bob. I applaud your shrewd business judgment in recommending Henry Kissinger to give the keynote address. I just wish I could forgive Kissinger, whose intellect I greatly admire, for participating in such an act of prostitu....er, crass commercialism. But it seems that most...

Re: Gillette Pivot Ball Razor - Stop The Insanity Already
The market is a crazy place, no doubt about it. Chelsea Clinton gets paid $75,000 for an hour's speech. I'm sure she's an estimable young lady, but $75K?

Re: Alum Blocks?
Gary, one of the benefits of the alum block is that it tells you how well you have shaved. For me at least, It does a better job than my bare hands of highlighting any areas that I may have missed - information that is useful for tomorrow's shave. It can also indicate when it's time to change blades...

Re: New Gillette cartridge razor
Murray, I'm tempted to point out that we have also lost the advanced horse-and-buggy driving techniques of our great-grandparents: how much buggy whip to apply, etc. But I won't. :) I'm older than you, I believe (71), so I well understand the attraction of the straight shift transmission. I resisted...

Re: New Gillette cartridge razor
Chris - Forgive me, but I'm not sure I get the logic of the metaphor. Shaving with a cartridge isn't the same as being shaved by a barber; that would seem to be a more apt comparison with your chauffeur. I'd say that if a guy really wants to do it the hard way, he should shave with a piece of obsidi...

Re: New Gillette cartridge razor
The new razor accepts any Fusion cartridge. The pivot ball gizmo is really just an unobtrusive tweak. I'm not even aware of it as I shave, but it must help, since my shaves have never been better. It's a bad rap on us old-time cartridge shavers that we depend upon the cartridge to compensate for poo...

Re: New Gillette cartridge razor
I must admit I have great respect for a man who shaves with a straight razor, just as I respect a man who can ride a motorcycle and repair his own car. If reincarnation is true, I hope one day to be reborn as a man's man who can do these things. But in this life I'll take the easy, lazy way of techn...
