Re: Cats, and the Killing Thereof

I tried your suggestion for using the pasted strop - first on the Heljestrands Mk133 and then on a Tosuke kamisori. After shaving with the Heljestrands, I felt that it may have been slightly sharper than off the hones, but I wasn't sure. After using the Tosuke, I'm pretty sure that the edge improved...

Thanks for the pointer. I Just tried this on my Heljestrands Mk133. We'll see how I like it once I've shaved. 3 passes on the pasted strop followed by 80 on linen.

Re: Cats, and the Killing Thereof

I love the shaves off my coticules, Thuringians and JNats, but I've never learned to like the edges after stropping (on CrOx or diamond pastes). I try it every now and then, but never stick with it. It's not the abrasives themselves, as I like the edges that I get when I hone on lapping film. It mus...

Re: Cats, and the Killing Thereof

This is a really enjoyable thread. I've had some of these razors in the past, and I feel a bit of nostalgia for them when reading this thread. The one I never had, but wanted, was the TIPTLE. I attempted to buy one when they were made available years ago, but missed out. Still wish I had one, even t...

Re: I've been thinking about getting a Futur

I've never had any issues with the Futur (as far as pain is concerned). I can imagine the weight and balance of the razor being an issue for some people (or myself, as I age). I doubt it is the finish of the handle itself that's the issue, because I've had the smooth gold version and the matte versi...

Re: The razors you like/use the most?

My preferences for a daily user keep changing, but for the moment:

1) Feather Portable with a heavier handle - nicely aggressive, and wonderful paired with a Feather blade.
2) Gem Clog-Pruf with Ted Pella SE blade.

That's a very interesting Leresche. Looks very cool.

I had an OC Leresche - pretty standard design, but I loved the shave. Not sure why I sold it. Oh well!

These are nice razors, and could be had for pretty cheap a while ago. Not sure what the current prices are, though.

Congrats on the pick-up.

If you want a close 1-2 pass shave with a DE, consider the new Muhle R41 tooth comb. It gives an almost str8 shave with the right blade. I love mine, but it puts a premium on technique and prep. A great razor if your shave-fu is strong. Wayne The R41 is certainly one to consider. However, it won't ...

Are you paying attention to the blade exposure on each side?

The Merkur slants I had have all allowed some play in the blade positioning. Perhaps you're aligning one side and leaving a different blade gap on the other side - which could explain the difference in shave quality.

I don't know if it is okay to mention this here, but the SUperior Shave still sells the old OC R41, I think. Their prices are decent too.

Now that ^ I'd buy.

:D

I hadn't considered the rust issue. Anyway, Greg's stuff is really good (generally), so I can see how this would be attractive.

Yeah, for that price I'd buy the real thing (the Pils).

The added grip is nice, I'm sure.

I own and use several different Rols Razor models. They're pretty common, and complete sets (with presentation cases and instructions) are not unusual. That said, your set is particularly nice. :) Even if it was unused, it is unlikely that the blade is shave-ready. The included hone is inadequate fo...

Since the knot seems fine, you could have it removed and inserted into a new handle.

I know Rudy Vey does this sometimes, so you could give him a shout. It won't say 'Simpson' on the handle, but it will still be the same knot.

Make sure you get it set at the same loft, of course.

I had one of these brushes (with a different handle design). It was really lovely to look at, and the jade felt nice to touch. I didn't care for the knot, so I replaced it with a TGN extra stuffed Finest. That was nice. I did notice that the great weight of the handle made it slightly uncomfortable ...

To be honest, I think this price is reasonable for a razor in this apparent shape and with a set this complete. However, as stated before, you need to find a buyer who not only wants a set like this, but can afford it. For my part, for example, I've been looking for a #15, but there's no way I can s...

I've had the Chubby 2 in Best, 3-band Super and 2-band Super, and I have a Rooney 2XL. The Rooney 2XL has the softest hair, but that's not necessarily a good thing. I like a bit of scrub. The Chubby 2 Best and 3-band were equivalent (in fact, I don't there's any reason to buy a 3-band Simpsons brush...

Like David, one experiment I tried is grating a little Williams into a small remnant of VDH. With the VDH molten I stirred in the Williams - then let it set. It seems to work great. Some tallow + glycerin soap = long lasting lather and slick shaving; and my skin seems to like it. And yes, the Willia...

I found my Chubby 2 best to be too floppy for my tastes. Both the pre- and post-Vulfix versions were not to my taste. However, I had a Colonel in Best and that was excellent. I now have a Chubby 3 in 2-band super, and that's an amazing brush. It does shed the occasional hair, but I guess that's expe...
