Re: Mystic Water Soap / Lemon Verbena

Hi, this is Michelle from Mystic Water Soap. I still render the tallow for my Sensitive Skin soap from the grass-fed beef raised by my friends Julie and Bob Bolton of Groff's Content Farm. As my business has grown, I have had to supplement that tallow with store-bought tallow (still food grade, thou...

Re: Tim's Soap - so long

Caveat emptor. There are many reputable artisans or home businesses or whatever you want to call them (and not all are "feel good hippies") who make excellent soap with nice scents and good customer service. And there are probably other people who think they've found a way to make a quick ...

Re: melt and pour, glycerin and such things

now I don't have an interest in most instances [sic] is that they refuse to take returns on a product unless there is something actually wrong . Say it comes and the jar is empty, or the jar exploded during shipment. Then you can get a return on it. But if you open it, take a sniff, and end up on y...

Re: lathering agents

I assume that he considers chelators like EDTA and pentasodium pentetate to be "lather enhancers". If you add a chelator to a bad soap, you'll have a bad soap that doesn't make soap scum in hard water. If you add it to a good one, you'll have a good soap that doesn't make soap scum. It mak...

Re: milling and moisture

"if desired", not obligatory. Both ways are correct, to list the ingredients that go into the product (tallow, coconut oil, sodium hydroxide, etc) or the result of the reaction (sodium tallowate, sodium cocoate, glycerin, etc.) I prefer the first method as I find it more straightforward bu...

Re: milling and moisture

The term "glycerin soaps" is confusing, Nic. Most people would think of either transparent soaps like Pear's and Musgo Real or melt & pour soaps like Mama Bear's. But all soap that's made of saponified oils contain glycerin unless it's been removed: they aren't "glycerin soaps&quo...

Re: milling and moisture

Milling doesn't remove glycerin. The kind of soap that is used for milling is industrially made "continuous process" soap from which the glycerin has already been removed and sold to the pharmaceutical/cosmetic industries as a byproduct. The soap to be milled is dried to between 13% and 18...

Re: Please Help - Lathering with Mystic Water Soft Soap

Ed, I'd be happy to help you if you want to contact me by email. It does sound like you need to add some water. Are you trying to face lather or build your lather in a bowl? Did you check out the videos on my website?

Re: DEEP SKIN CLEANSING MASKS

Not Emily but all you need for a do-it-yourself masque is some dry cosmetic clay and a liquid with which to mix it. The only "equipment" you need is a small spoon and a tea cup, small bowl or even the palm of your hand. It takes very little clay, just a couple of teaspoons: the idea is not...

Re: Rolling My Own

For my regular soap I prefer cold process because of the design possibilities - but besides being a creative expression, it makes it easy to identify a soap that someone doesn't remember the name of: if they describe what it looked like, I'll usually be able to figure out what it was, even years lat...

Dave, I'm not sure that the rules of the forum allow me to talk about my business if I'm not an official vendor here. If a mod tells me that I can, I'd be happy to oblige. I started as a hobbyist nearly 20 years ago, and have had my biz for eight now.

Re: Rolling My Own

Thank you, Chris. :) In recent years there's been a proliferation of specialized types of melt & pour soap, some for particular purposes like shaving or crystal clear for decorative soaps, or opaque with goats milk or shea butter, mimicking regular soap (glycerin soap used to be distinguished by...

Re: Rolling My Own

When you say "cold pour", do you mean "cold process"? The two main artisan techniques for making bar soaps are cold process and hot process, the difference being that cold process is accomplished with no added heat beyond what is needed to melt the oils. Hot process, usually done...

Green Irish Tweed (and my Irish Traveller) is a blend of lemon, lemon verbena, iris and violet leaves (for the green notes) and sandalwood and ambergris in the base. It's a cologne scent and women really like it too - I sell a lot of the bar soap to the ladies.

A lot of people have sensitivities to fragrances so you want to look for a product that actually doesn't contain fragrance, not just one that's faint. Also, my understanding is that FDA regulations allow the use of fragrance in supposedly "fragrance free" products, if it's there for the pu...
