I used a Norvell-Shapleigh Snap No. 35. I really wanted to use my Dubl Duck GE, but I've been testing the edge from a coticule on the Snap lately.

I don't have a good pic of the razor, but I'll try to get one a little later today when I go home for lunch.

I never bought that many at one time, so I just got them off Amazon. However, the last time I bought them, I got them from Charles Roberts' store in Austin (I was in town, so I dropped by). He had the best prices that I've seen.... then again, I didn't have to pay shipping.

Don't mean to double post, but I wanted to let everyone know how my first real straight shave went. Aside from a weeper or two, everything went great. It took a few minutes to get used to the length of the blade compared to the shavette. Once I was over that, everything went well. There's definitely...

Stropping is the one part of the whole process that gives me some cause for concern. Based on advice I've received from at least two people, I think I'm going to start with the strop laid on a table until I get the hang of the stroke-and-flip. Once I'm accustomed to that, I'll try it with the strop ...

Tell me about it. I haven't even used a real straight yet and I can already hear them calling my name from all the various online retailers.

I thought I'd give everyone another update. It'll be another few days before all my gear arrives, so I'm still using the shavette. For today's shave I decided to buck my normal routine and use MWF shave soap instead of the Art of Shaving cream that I normally use. I worked up a good lather and proce...

I've been meaning to post again since I got in touch with Capt. He's sending a razor for me to try along with a sample of his bay rum aftershave. I also purchased a strop set from WhippedDog, which should arrive before the razor does. I was telling Capt that it's refreshing to find an online communi...

Thanks for the info; that's what I was hoping to hear. Now I've just got to save up a little money so I can get a razor and a set of strops.

Trying to transition from a DE to a straight

I started shaving with a DE razor about two years ago, and I had always had the intention of eventually making the switch to a straight. However, since I wasn't sure if I wanted to make the investment I decided to get the Dovo shavette and give it a try to see if it was something I thought I could h...

I used the Progress again on Friday morning and I ditched the Merkur blade in favor of a Feather. What a great shave! With my Gillette, I can use sloppy technique and get away with it, but this razor will be a different story until I get used to it. I took extra care to make sure to go slow and use ...

You HAD a good razor and now you have TWO. A. buy a sampler pack B. If you've used feathers before they deserve as much a chance as any blade c. Iridiums I love the Gilette, and until my neck is back to normal I'll be using it. I'm not giving up on the Progress just yet but it sure is a different k...

Need some advice...

So, I've been DE shaving for almost a year and a half and I finally decided that it was time to get a good razor. I really liked the Merkur Progress razors, so I picked up the long handle, adjustable version earlier this week. This thing is AGGRESSIVE compared to the old adjustable Gillette that I'v...
