Re: Darwin/Gillette Super Stainless vs. Mongoose/Feather Pro

I used to think that blades only provided 3 or 4 good shaves, but in the past couple of months I've been trying for more and finding out that it's pretty easy to get 10 or more good shaves from a single blade. I'm convinced that most people toss blades early based on biases they learned on forums li...

Re: Polsilver Super Iridium

for me the Polsilver blades are in a league of their own. I bought 200 of them. they are sharp and smooth in equal measure. there are virtually no duds. As for longevity, at first I used them for 4 shaves and then tossed them. over time I lengthened out the number of shaves without any noticeable de...

Re: After all these years (rose shave soap)...

If you don't mind a bit of another scent mixed in with your rose, Michelle at Mystic Water makes a superb soft soap with a scent called Rosalimone, which is, as you might guess, a combination of rose and lemon. Rose is the principal scent. The Soap Commander also makes a rose soap; I believe he call...

Head only would be awesome. I could pair it with my custom UFO handle. Not a fan of the smooth handle.

Re: Coates Rose cream

I don't use creams, but I currently have Mystic Water soap's "Rosalimone" in my rotation, and it's probably the best scent of any shaving product I have ever tried. The mix of rose and lemon is just perfect.

Re: Progress Report

It's an interesting razor, to be sure. Fairly good shaver. Neither looks nor feels like any of my other razors. I like it opened up to about 4 for the first pass, then dialed down to 2.75 or so (it's a continuous adjusting system) for subsequent passes. Doesn't get much burn anymore in my den becaus...

Re: ANYTHING LIKE AOS TALLOW

Oxford and Cambridge is amazing soap.

You can buy travel-sized pucks in groups of 3. A long time ago I got two other guys who were interested and we split the cost. That's probably the most affordable way to experience it.

Re: 2nd-generation Tradere safety bar razor

Never been tempted to acquire this razor, as it reminds me too much of the Pils I have and rarely use, and the ikon S3S, well, half of it, anyway, ditto. I'm sure it's finely made, as reported, just no need to duplicate what I already have buried in the nether regions of my den. Love the handle, th...

Re: 2nd-generation Tradere safety bar razor

Micheal: Yes, it's that good from the get-go, and it doesn't get worse over time, at least for me. The reason I enjoyed it so much the first few shaves was not because I was in a "honeymoon" period, it was because it's an outstanding razor. I have been using it nearly every day since I bou...

Re: razor rock xxx ??'s

I heard that the XXX scent was being brought back but in a different soap base; probably even a better latherer than the original XXX. Razorock currently markets a soap called XX. Rumor is that Joe is bringing back the XXX scent in the XX-soap formulation. Guys that have tried both soaps are in gene...

Re: New shaving soap from Penhaligons

I saw the same glowing reports at some of the other sites. The guy who started the thread is a wetshaver that is well known on another forum and has a good reputation. There were also some lather photos that looked pretty good (I know it's impossible to truly judge the quality of a lather by a photo...

Re: Ikon ShaveCraft 101 Razor Head

Oh, I know. Fully aware. It still annoys me a little, but maybe it shouldn't. My current favorite razor, the Tradere SB, aligns the blade dead nuts every time, as do my Fatboy and my Tech, as you know. I haven't shaved with the Progress for quite some time. Maybe I should pull it out and give it a w...

Re: Ikon ShaveCraft 101 Razor Head

To me the Progress is a entirely different beast from any of my other razors. The feel is completely different, no matter what the setting. The only down side of the Progress is that the blade tends to load improperly, so I have to tweak it so the exposure is the same on both sides. I find this part...

Re: Stirling Soaps

I've never tried them, but there is quite a buzz being generated about these soaps, especially given the price point. His bath soaps are extremely competitively priced, as well.

Probably only a matter of time before I order some stuff from his site.

Re: Any of you have an Old Type in your regular rotation?

I tried it this morning with a Polsilver blade. Interesting, and quite nice. My daily driver is a very heavy razor (Tradere SB with a custom UFO handle), so this felt light, short, and thin in my hand, but it cut through the whiskers very smoothly and easily. Looks like King Gillette did a pretty da...

My picture in the Wall Street Journal online!

Gentlemen, Just a quick but crazy story. When I was in medical school a long, long time ago, I formed a garage band with a couple of my friends. We cut a demo tape just before we graduated. We tried to farm it out but were unsuccessful. Fast-forward 24 years and I get contacted by a guy named Reed S...

Re: Any of you have an Old Type in your regular rotation?

Bruce, the 1934 Red and Black is a Gillette NEW. They are quite popular. I am talking about a razor that is at least two iterations earlier in the pantheon. Before the NEW there was the New Deluxe and the New Standard, and before that there was the Old Type. Your 1918 razor would qualify, for sure.

thanks for nice write-up and beautiful photos. I'm very interested in this head, for some reason. I tried one iKon in the past and didn't care for it much, but this one really has me salivating. I notice that you didn't use it with its handle. Did you buy the head separately? If so, could you tell u...

Any of you have an Old Type in your regular rotation?

Just curious. I used to have a pretty nice Old Type but it didn't get that much use, so I sold it along with a boatload of others in an attempt to "thin the herd." Recently my wife went to Pennsylvania for a wedding and she came back with a crusty, nasty looking 1918 military Old Type that...
