Re: 2019-100yrs since my family started the business

Thanks for the replies so far! I’m thinking of a mix of traditional designs and something a bit more contemporary. I’ve been thinking what the original family brush makers would consider today if they were starting up and have a few designs I’m going to play with for starters. Different handle mater...

2019-100yrs since my family started the business

Back in 1919 my family started the shaving brush business that created so many designs still seen today. Well 2019, 100yrs since their ideas became reality, seems an apt time to fire up a lathe, tie some knots and see if I can muster up some of the Simpson family craft skills. Is it time for one of ...

Re: Why buy Simpsons brushes?

Hi Guys, This is probably my first view of the forums for a about a year. Hope those of you that I chatted with previously are keeping well. I've read more negatives than positives in regards to 'why buy Simpson brushes'. Real shame as so much hard work was put in for some many years by my family to...

Re: Applying lampblack to Somerset Simpson brushes...

Guys I am sorry but I have no plans of any kind of foray, either via forums or 'practical', as far as anything 'Simpson' is concerned. Different opinions and understandings a while ago have meant that I am resigned to being part of that Simpson 'history'. I still view the forums occasionally but wil...

Rufus, and it fits in a small Rx pill bottle if you need a travel brush. Just drill some holes in the top and bottom and it's good to go. Just don't put it in the bottle wet. Yup, it's an amazing miniscule brush; and to think, it's the medium size WeeScot. That's what I find amazing. There was a We...

When it does it soon after purchase the manufacturer is at fault. Instructions as to how to use a brush are simply weasel words to diminish l...

Evening Gents!

Although I do not post, I still frequently visit.

We always used to use the term 'knot hole'-in line with all your own thoughts.

I hope all the old 'faces' on here have been keeping well.

This Simpson "Tourist" brush may well be rare or not seen very often. But it is not Art Deco 1920's, but from the 1960's. Charles U.K Charles Where do you get the info from that this is a 1960s brush? The Simpson decal is a 'London' one. My family did not use the 'London' decal after movi...

Re: #44 GYLE in dark arrived today...

I just finished up my first shave with my new GYLE. My first impression (drum roll please)... This brush is VERY NICE!!! Admitedly I did not put the brush through any "test" by using a soap/cream that is challenging to lather. I used some AOS Ocean Kelp SC which I have found to be a very ...

Wow, nice brushes. That Polo 8 is different from the one I have. I've never seen one like that. Actually, I don't really think it's a Polo - just a P8, whatever that stands for. The 'P' stands for Phyl - my grandmother's first name. As said before, we all have brushes named after us in a roundabout...

I was in London today for a couple of business meetings and called into D.R. Harris for a 'catch up' with Alison the Managing Director. We had a good chat for well over an hour, chatting about the good old days. On some of their shop shelves they have mini displays of some of the older products/spec...

Gary, any chance you could share it's history with the rest of us? DrP had it, I had it, and so did Paddy. It's a very unique brush and the history of it, I am sure is pretty interesting. Kind regards, Nathan Hi Nathan Well it would be good to know the timeline - as in, when it was first purchased,...

Re: Some New Somersets

Five more Somerset Simpson brushes have arrived from Peter: a genuine ivory, an Astor in Best, a Chubby 3 in Super, a butterscotch W2 in Best, and a 46 in Best. Into the rotation they go. http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i433/churchilllafemme/IMG_3744.jpg http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i433...

Gareth, Interesting. Thanks, I hadn't caught that. Congrats. to D R Harris although I'm rather used to them holding two Royal Warrants. Their first was from the current Queen's mother and was granted in the 1930s. The second wasn't until 2002, shortly before HRH's grandmother passed away. I started...

Gary, which brushes were produced in boar & when did Simpsons stop making them?
We made various styles with boar knots (not just the ones shown in this flyer) right up until we gave up the business in 1991.

Yes it one of our old designs. See attached photo for another old design from around the same era. It is a shame that your photo doesn't show any decals on the brush. If it had a decal with 'Made in London' rather than 'Made in England' you would be definitely looking at a pre 1941 Simpson brush. Lo...
