The order I believe would be after your shave, rinse, alum, rinse*, after-shave(s)**

*Some people don't rinse after alum; I do.
**Some people do a combo of splash/balm; you would do splash first, then balm. Thinnest stuff first.

Shame the ones around me have all but sold out of the balms. I think I saw some of the blue or red last I looked. The green and black were my favorites - nice scent, excellent performance. The unscented one can still be had from C.O. Bigelow direct.

Noticed this as well. I think the heat causes a swelling of the skin on your face which obscures some stubble. Cooling your face reveals it.

I don't think I've tried a Simpson brush that performed less than superbly with soaps. As with any very dense brush, loading with more soap will be somewhat necessary. It's a hungry brush, so you have to feed it before it will start giving lather back. Still, the baseline density for Simpson brushes...
