Re: Look at what my grammie found in her medicine cabinet

Brothers, that's awesome. I'll clean it up tomorrow and give it a test with a Feather, or more likely, a Personna Med Prep. Another source told me it's more aggressive than my Merkur 23c. Thanks!

Beautiful. Does anyone know anything about this particular razor? We speculate that it was my great-grandfather's based on the fact that it's pre-unification but post WWII.

Re: Birthday gifts!

Thanks, everyone. Just found a Merkur Super blade hidden in the packaging, and shaved with it. It was very different from using a straight, but not quite so difficult by any means. I found the shave to be very mild, but this may change when I get the Feathers. Simply a lot faster. DEs will serve me ...

Birthday gifts!

About a week late with this post, but for my birthday, my parents got me some Dr. Harris rose shaving cream, a Merkur DE razor, and some Feather blades. The blades shipped from Thailand, so they have not arrived yet, but I look forward to giving an update about how I do with the DE.

Re: Linux

This is a bit late because I've been traveling and such. I usually run Kubuntu. I like KDE+debian package management. There's probably something else I could use to do this, but they usually do a good job. I've gotten all of my new hardware together, upgraded the tower, and installed Arch, which us...

Re: Shaving over a mole/spot...

Speaking as a teenager who breaks out now and then, usually I can just shave right over pimples and blackheads without causing any damage at all, as long as I stretch properly. I would reiterate the advice that you get a dermatologist to check it.

Re: Need help finding a good hone

All right, thank you all for your responses. I think I'll go with the Norton set and then as I need more sharpening, I can experiment with some other stones. My paralyzing fear of Purchaser's Remorse notwithstanding, I'm sure that the Norton will do fine for what I'm working with. Thanks again, you ...

Re: Need help finding a good hone

Entirely different but I got my best results from coticules, you can find more information on how to use those here: http://www.coticule.be/straight-razor-honing.html I found them easy to use and especially the fact that I only needed one stone to do my sharpening. I'm sure others will give you adv...

Need help finding a good hone

All right, the time has finally come for me to purchase a whetstone. I have been warned off the Norton 4000/8000 due to inconsistent quality, and have been shopping around at a couple of different places. I have a few ideas, but was wondering if you all had any input. Option #1 from Japan Woodworker...

Re: Linux

I've been using Linux for 10 years now. Right now I run OpenSuse and KDE. It is very customizable, which us great for me, but bad for elderly parents and those who provide them tech support. I think there is a kiosk mode that would lock down pretty well, but Gnome is fairly kiosky already IMHO. I s...

Re: WTB Barber Hone or Norton Sharpening set

Coltrane, I have recently tried the newest combination 4k/8k Norton stones and do NOT RECOMMEND them. Either I got a bad stone or the quality control has gone off and they crumble too quickly. I have tried the break in method the 4k side as recommended by others and they still do not produce the sm...

Re: Shaved my dad this morning...

Coltrane, I think you're doing okay too. I'm sorry I don't have any sharpening stones for you. When you get into the realm of keeping your razors sharp, it will feel pretty darn good. Yeah, unfortunately I'm thinking I might have to bite the bullet and buy one new. I'll start looking into them. I j...

Linux

I'm in the process of upgrading the hard drive on one of my dad's old computers, but of course, we don't have any Windows Live discs and I'm not shelling out money for what they're selling NOW. I'm considering running Linux Mint, which is a very simple, user friendly distribution. I'd also like to r...

Re: Shaved my dad this morning...

Should have used a new "DE" Blade instead of what I assume was a STR8. STR8s are hard to maintain unless you have a lot of experience where as DE's are usually sharp from the get go (depending on the brand). Check you Dad's will, it may have changed. Maybe, but I'm committed to straights!...

Ha! He asked me, believe it or not. It was a really crappy job below the neck if I do say so myself. Like I said, I need to sharpen it and it kept pulling.

Re: (Yet another) new shaver

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I may be interested in using a DE in the future, but for right now, I have the luxury of having the time to use a straight. I see this thread is six months old. Sadly the straight razor replica the OP bought will never shave. I hope he has bought a functional ra...
