Finally have a moment to logon and note down my impressions of the small Rooney style 1 I picked up a couple of weeks ago. As Gordon observed of his super, the build quality is excellent, but I didn’t note that the bristles were especially thicker than my white chubby #1 (will recheck this though), ...

Ronney Finest from T&H

Chaps, After purchasing a chubby #1 white at Trumpers last month and, like others, having decided not to use it with coloured creams, I was on the look out for an alternative brush for use with such and had decided in advance to pick up a Harris. As I'm currently at a conference in the metrop, a cou...

Ah yes, I picked up a few packs in Portugal last year and whilst the packaging is different (simply 'Gillette Platinum' distributed by Gillette 'Lisboa, Madrid, Milano') I didn’t think there was any real discernable difference between them and the Swedish Gillette's. Except they were cheaper.

Peter, a quite remarkable collection of brushes (particularly given these embody just the superset of those in your ‘regular’ use, rather than your collection). However, the bowl in the last two pictures (I’m in the market for a new one right now) interests me – from the pictures it is apparently th...

Thanks for the replies chaps. I’m relieved on the one hand by Gordon’s comments – I’d understood that a white would be stiffer perhaps, but it was only when I got it home and compared it properly did I realise how much so. Nathan and Peter have a point about the term ‘prickly’ - indeed ‘barbed’ is a...

Amongst Peter's many fine 'regular' brushes, there's a rather nice looking bowl. From the picture it seems to be a combination ceramic/metal affair. Would be interesting to know where that came from.

white chubby #1, one week on...

In a previous POST I described my latest brush - a 'white' or 'upland' Simpsons #1 Chubby. Since then I've had over a weeks worth of use of and would like to mention some observations. Firstly it is 'prickly' in comparison to my previous #2. Tha'ts a good word - the #2 was 'firm' but this actually '...

And yes, I know, there's one way for sure of determining this - buying a #1 Manchurian when I'm in Trumpers next week. I dont need an excuse nor a reminder...

Nathan, Quite, quite superb. I'm interested in the equivalent softness between the white supers and the manchurian grades. As you know I recently compared the two in Trumpers, and was unable to determine a difference. But there is no comparison between the white #1 super I ended up with and my #2 Su...

Nathan, I think you’ve got it there. I’d wandered about Mayfair, keeping an eye out for the unusual yet saw nothing - Taylors did have some nice all-blacks, by which I mean the Plisson-style entirely all black bristle, but they were the only others that stood out. In Trumpers I saw a lone brush in a...

Nathan, that helps - no the Supers and Manchurians I compared were by no means as obviously different in size as that. The Manchurians were possibly a little bit more densely packed than the Super, so perhaps a little wider, but only on very close inspection - and even then not enough to warrant a c...

Nathan, ah well, I inspected and compared reasonably closely - in fact they sold two brushes during the time I took to go through the contents of their stockroom - but it occurs that I didn't closely determine any size differences between the Supers and Manchurians. They looked reasonably enough the...

Since the Super I got was identical to the Manchurian in every respect (except possibly for bristle density but even that was moot), I didnt pay much attention to the prices. So, given that, the #3 Manchurian was £340 or £304 possibly, there was certainly a 3, a 0 and a 4 at least! The #1 was either...

It was Jermyn Street but I paid a premium for it at £140 - unlike TGS they don't seem to have lowered their prices. The #1 is indeed a small handled affair Sam, perhaps a little smaller than I'd expected it to be and I think a handle that was between it and the #2 would be perfect. Overall though, t...

Hi Jason, I'm lucky enough to stroll that route from Green Park to Piccadilly once a month or so, and I was in Taylors yesterday. All their tubs of cream are indeed in the new containers, except Rose for some reason. You're spot on about the brush display in Harris', quite something indeed, and when...

Simpsons Manchurians

In Trumpers yesterday I spotted a chubby#1 in super that looked exactly like what has previously, and at length, been described as upland silvertip - all black shafts of hair with a much whiter, softer crown than the other #1 sitting next to it. On discussing the matter with the chap in the shop he ...

Well, I don’t think we should be too hasty in condemning the new formulation. Admittedly, many will have liked the original Avocado fragrance, but I wasn’t one of them (a personal thing, after all, and I prefer the floral). So the new lighter, less cologne-like fragrance is to my liking. Have just f...

As I only had half a pot left, I picked up another from Taylors a month or so ago, and popped it in the cupboard. Hadn’t noticed until this thread but they have indeed changed it. The old pot was printed in bronze lettering, the new is in green. Hard to tell, given Taylors track record, but the newe...
