Re: Rolling My Own

My son is home for a couple of weeks and happened to mention that he needed some soap. What is he - a straight man or what? Feeding me a line like that. Anyway, he now knows how to make soap, and has 3lb of soap cooking. I let him loose with all my scent oils and he has mixed up an amaretto/pepperm...

Re: Rolling My Own

ok I've done some more reading on the coconut oil thing but it's till all Greek to me... sorry to our Greek friends. I don't have a chemistry back ground so I'm having a hard time understanding what I'm actually reading about the coconut types of oils. Also I did note that soapcalc lists them separa...

Re: Rolling My Own

Wow jk. Your post reminds me of some of the discussions that took place in this thread about a year ago when it was new, between Chris and Tim. I successfully avoided all of the technical stuff, and waited until I had a recipe in hand that others have found to be successful. I got my Coconut oil fr...

Re: Rolling My Own

I had a question that I bounced off of Chris as a pm but I thought maybe I should be posing the question here to gain the collective wisdom of others... and I also thought this might be the appropriate thread.... There are a number of different types of coconut oils. The one I've been using I think ...

Re: Rolling My Own

That's the hardship of scenting a hot process soap; it has to cool enough to avoid evaporating the lighter elements of the fragrance oils, but once it's cool enough it is hard to work the scent in to the firm batter. That's why people use cold process - people who don't have an urgent need to shave...

Re: Rolling My Own

Sorry, I was not suggesting that I buy my stearic acid over the Internet. I actually meant to say, but forgot to say, this hobby lobby is just a few miles from my house and I don't have to order it. I know it would be expensive otherwise. I hope you can find some locally at a candle making supply s...

Re: Rolling My Own

The only place I have found stearic acid is at a large store called Hobby Lobby, it is kept back in the back with the candle making supplies. thanks for the link Gary but I'm going to try getting it locally in Canada... UPS/FEdex/Purcolator and such... wants part of our first born in the shipping d...

Re: Rolling My Own

I'm relieved to know you were able to figure out what happened. Sounds like you're on the right track. Let us know how the new soap batch works out. It worked out great Gary... I'm already ordering more stearic... gosh I wish there was a local source for that stuff. I'm right next door to Toronto a...

Re: Rolling My Own

Well folks I now know where my problem was... I feel incredibly foolish about this because if I had done something like this in the other sport I'm involved with it would have been game over, seriously... I was adding sodium to sodium... I opened the wrong bag. I discovered it sitting on the stairca...

Re: Rolling My Own

Thanks for the comments Dave... at the stage I'm at total newbie worrying about this 10% difference is the least of my worries I suppose. I tried 3 batches screwed up every single time... not exactly sure where I'm going wrong with the recipes I'm using that others seems be having success with. my b...

Re: Rolling My Own

got another question regarding the purity of KOH... Normally what's used is not 100% pure, correct? I believe it's 90%. If this is the case the recipe "Shaving Soap MKIII KOH portion done in SoapCalc is using the 100% formulation... In Soapcalc you have the option when choosing the KOH to toggl...

Re: Rolling My Own

ah yesss... crystal now... Chris... can't see the forest for trees! It clicked when you said... "So the ingredients common to both must be added together, but the two lyes stay the same." and that does make sense... It was the way I was reading interpreting stuff before...
