Re: honing services
I live in Maryland ands here are some pictures. It needs more than a typical honing service provides. Especially a free service. I would start out with sandpaper. Charlie Lewis has a YouTube on sanding using a wine cork and various grits. You can get it to a mirror finish with the super fine automo...

Re: Badger Silvertip Knot Expansion
Now get yourself a Stirling synthetic for $20 and save your badger(and badgers) for a once a week luxury. I pull out my naturals less and less. They are a fun diversion, but the soaking and drying just add to the effort. The synth is dip and go and for me lathers as good as my best natural. Just dif...

Since you are in Europe, head over to Coticule.be. Many skilled enthusiasts there that of course love Belgian Coticle edges. They can direct you to viable resellers in your area that sell "shave ready" new and vintage razors.

Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish
If you haven't tried this stuff on a cotton strop or piece of denim, it might be the magic you seek. I find it adds keenness without the harshness I get from Chromium Oxide. It is actually extra fine Aluminum Oxide. As long as the edge is fully developed this polish will improve ATG passes and help ...

Re: Looking for cream/soap combination shaving brush
Stirling Soap Company has a Plisson knot in 22 and 26mm. I have both and they are all I use now. No soaking, lather machines soap or cream. Easy to clean fast drying. All for around $20.

Re: Pre shave...cleansing face
If you struggle with dry skin you might want to switch to cold water. The hot water exacerbates stripping the oils from your skin. Cold water less so. I cannot find any difference in the shave of cold vs hot water. Hot water is just what I am used to. In the summer I switch to cold anyway.

Re: Question about shaving brush
If you use a Silver Tip Badger every day is will loose its' backbone. Get yourself a Stirling 22 or 26 mm synth, and for $20 you will extend the life of your badger. You might find as I did that the $20 brush does a great job and makes the badger a special weekend event. I haven't used my naturals f...

Does size really matter
Now that I've got your attention; I think many buying their 1st or 2nd razor have perceived that bigger is better and dream of a 7/8+ razor. I will suggest that they are missing out on many wonderful options in 3/8 and 4/8. I decided to test my hypothesis with a less than scientific test. I took my ...

Re: Why Synthetic?
I have two synths, one Plisson and one Stirling, same knot, that now sit permanently by the sink. My badgers, boars and horse stay in their cedar box. Pros: No soaking required, just dip, wet the puck and go Great lather face or bowl Easy to clean. Fast rinse and they don't buildup residue requiring...

Re: Ultimate Honing
My question with this process has to do with honing by numbers. I always find that an edge is ready to progress forward when it is ready. That might be 50 strokes or 100. I never count. But, there is always a tell such as undercut, sound, suction etc. If I go under or past that point on any stone in...

Re: Hello from new guy
Welcome to SMF! I'm glad you have a taste for 3/8 blades if you hone every four shaves! Chris That's funny:). Lest any new honers get the wrong idea, you could put a razor on a true finisher everyday for 10 years with no noticeable hone or edge wear. I usually use Koma then Tomo Nagura th...

Re: Blade longevity?
Your blade angle might have become more shallow with experience and that would be easier on the edge.

Hello from new guy
Hello folks, I just joined this forum and this is my 1st post. Although new to this group I have been straight razor shaving and honing for many years. I like any razor with a proper edge from 3/8 - 7/8. I've never had a 8/8 but I'm sure they are fine too. I do prefer full and extra full hollow. I h...
