Re: Why the bias against pastes?

Arthur Boon. About 16 to 20 years ago he had one of the first well-known websites about straight razor shaving and maintenance. He declared pastes were to be avoided as they degraded the edge (paraphrasing from memory). His site has long since been taken down but archived on some straight razor enth...

Re: FS: High-End Vintage Software and Hardware

Great memories, guys!

I still remember setting the timing on my first car. I could get it so I could balance a quarter on the radiator.

Those were indeed the days.

Beautiful blade and fascinating story. Thanks for sharing this.

Much of what you say for why you love this stuff is true, I think, about a lot of us. I know, myself, I like things that work and last.

Looking forward to the next post.

Re: What are you reading?

Yes, interesting articles, um. I do enjoy vintage magazines because they provide a window into what was at that moment and even more so for how they viewed the world to come. Playboy is interesting during this period precisely for those reasons. The advice columns are fascinating in what they promul...

Re: What are you reading?

Finally finished Diamonds Are Forever and picked up a copy of the July 1964 edition of Playboy magazine.

Ahem, I'm a little behind on my periodicals reading.

Re: Where to buy straight razor pins?

Gary, no worries, great to get another opinion. I am right there with you and for the same reasons. Bill, good to hear. I expect and hope that will work well for you. My Boker has washers and the scales were not tight at all. Initially this didn't bother me but over time it did to my surprise. I too...

Re: Where to buy straight razor pins?

Related to this topic, Bill, do you prefer washers on the inside of the scales? If so did you get them?

I am finding that I like my razor handles without washers and just seeing if anyone else has the same preference.

I hope it works out for him, seems he's a go-getter.

Re: FS: C&E Mysore Sandalwood Shaving Soap

These cakes are very nice indeed. I have one and it is simply wonderful to smell. Very much like Trumper's sandalwood cream, yet richer in a way. From what I've read they have true sandalwood in them but who knows. I break mine out every Christmas season for a shave because it has that Trumper's cre...

Re: Worcestershire sauce low/no sodium substitute

Gary, I hope so for your sake. Worchestershire sauce has always been loaded with sodium from what I remember. It's supposedly a secret formulation etc, etc. Anyway I'd think it would be hard to faithfully reproduce in a low/no sodium formulation. As a side note it's a fantastic flavoring for sauces ...

Re: "Premier" razor?

Bill, to address your questions: 1) Honing at an angle with the heel leading is perfectly acceptable and is in no way detrimental IMHO. It is actually a method depicted in many hone instruction illustrations. I myself hone my blade this way and have never encountered an issue. You can experiment wit...

Re: Col Conk Soap -- a plreasant surprise

I've used Conk soap successfully about 20 some odd years ago. But since I've aged and gotten more sensitive I can't use it anymore. Tried it once in the last year (old cake from bygone days so may be a factor but seemed to be alright) and it caused a lot of irritation. It also lacked the cushion I f...
