Re: Nostalgic Shave

From there I found the earliest forums (read: the old Yahoo forum on straight razor shaving) and was ebullient at finding other's that actually shaved with a straight like I did. Chris I believe young Elbolicious (later EL) arrived there just before I did. There was a brief period when enthusiasm a...

Re: Nostalgic Shave

'swhat i think is amazing is that you remember the details. i cant remember a single thing about shaving as a teen except that i started before i needed to because i had read or heard that the more one shaves the faster one gets to grow a beard and who didnt want to be 'older' back then?? :D...

Re: Nostalgic Shave

Was that Noxzema skin cream or shaving cream? Rufus, it was the skin cream, plain old Noxzema. I tried it because my boss at the time recommended it saying he used it. I was working at my High School when he recommended it. I would clean the rooms and boards after school to make money for tuition. ...

Nostalgic Shave

Today I decided to do a nostalgic shave, that is, to shave with the stuff I shaved with as a teen when I started to use a straight. The star of this shave is Noxzema. I used the same brush I bought at an old tobacco store (the store is now decades defunct) and Noxzema. I washed my face with soap and...

You're on a tear! These look mouthwatering. I think I gained five pounds just reading this thread.

Thanks for posting this and the other. I've got to try them one day.

Re: Changing my routine

Dr. Moss, yes, I believe we mean the same thing. My memory of how to accurately describe angles is fuzzy. I think the proper reference may be "more acute". But, yeah, the angles of 30 degrees or less helps in the more sensitive areas. I know that on my throat I can go more obtuse with no feeling of ...

The Stone of Scone

A bit of useless trivia here but some may find it interesting. I was lying in bed one night looking for an old movie to watch a little bit of before turning in. I came across the movie "The Kings Speech". It's about George VI and preparing him for coronation and leading England through the impending...

The one thing that we can't change!
Indeed, though it used to show up later when I did multiple passes. I'm not bothered by it though as I leave my office a 4 PM. :)

Re: Changing my routine

I'd have expected more irritation from an angle of attack >30º, but if it's working for you I'm pleased! Do you remember how I have posted about not feeling how there is a slight pull with straights? Well, I can feel it when the angle is steep, at least on my cheeks and chin. A lower angle mitigate...

Changing my routine

As I age my skin is becoming more sensitive. In response I've made a few changes to my routine. I went back to shaving before a shower. I build my lather in a bowl and paint my face with it. I wash my face before I shave and the whiskers seem softer because they are still wet from the process when I...

Re: The Science of Sharp Blog

Gary, that is a beautiful razor but I just don't know about the wrapping. I never was a fan of wrapping even on modern razors like the Bergisher Lowe. To me they felt non-functional and only impeded my ability to hone and strop them. If it were mine I'd just remove it and deal with the blade as it i...

Re: Ancient North American cultures

Gary, I suspect a lot of what folks conjecture about what ancient civilizations did is just that. But in the end we really don't know.

I do notice, to your point, these folks aren't around living that supposed way anymore. Who knows why, maybe a failed experiment etc.

Re: Changed my hair dressing

Clive, a good recommendation. It is very much like the Yardley lavender hair cream ingredients wise ( an old product, not the brilliantine) that I have. Although the hair cream is good I did try it recently to alleviate the dry hair it's too greasy and doesn't let the hair dry to a more natural stat...
