Re: Rescuing my GFT Eucris

Bill, the only advice I can give you is to try distilled water right now. It's soft and can help make a good lather out of the modern stuff. You'll never get "that lather" from modern stuff but it can be worthy under softer conditions. Also, a water softener can also produce wonders. I'll never forg...

Re: "That Lather"

Rick, good post! I believe that C&S soaps are now made by Valobra, the same Italian maker of the old AOS soaps of yore. They made "that lather" as well. Here's hoping C&S sticks to their guns. If they don't it seems there may always be Valobra as the Italians don't seem fazed by the current trends. ...

Re: "That Lather"

Slackskin, I can't speak for the current iteration of D.R. Harris shaving soaps but the soaps of yore (the one I have) were excellent.

I rotated through it recently and it is excellent.

Many report that they are still the same. Here's hoping that is still the case.

Re: New Mattress Suggestions?

Murray, she's kinda like champagne: gotta let her gush a little after the uncorking. Once that's passed then comes the good stuff.

Just have to be a little patient.

Truefitt & Hill Creams

In the past many of us have observed these excellent creams cut a bit closer than their cousins, Trumper, Taylors, and the like. Revisiting these lately I realized, that for myself, they make an excellent one-pass shaving cream. It may be the age of my creams but these seem to cut closer than even s...

Re: "That Lather"

Rick, that's a good point. I had forgotten about the "Mad Cow" hysteria and it had been proffered at the time, if I recall correctly. But I seem to remember someone posting that mad cow would not survive the soap making process. I don't think that would give soap-makers legal cover though so it seem...

Re: New Mattress Suggestions?

Well, tonight after dinner the Mrs. let loose. I was selecting a cigar from the humidor when she started in on how she can feel every coil in the bed now. She asked me, "Don't you feel it too?" My response was "No, I feel fantastic as all my pain is nearly gone, maybe we should consider separating t...

Re: The Boxes of Shame - where does this stuff come from?

Gary, even though it hasn't happened again, I've definitely been mighty tempted at times when I've imbibed the spirits.

One of these days my luck is going to run out.

Re: New Mattress Suggestions?

Gene, thanks so much for the feedback. The one that you're considering is the one the wife picked out. Both of us get acid reflux at times and the ability to raise the head will be a blessing should it be needed. We have a wedge cushion for this when needed but won't be needed in the future if we ge...

Re: Spam?

Brian, I remember when I bought it as a bachelor that I would fry it. It shrank, if I remember correctly. Many good memories of those days being brought back with this thread. I also remember that it was a good cheap meat substitute for a guy on a limited budget. The guy I split the apartment with a...

Re: "That Lather"

Janus, thanks so much for this. I have to tell you that it comes just as I recently used my Salter French Vetiver cream the other day for the first time in years. It's so old it's still in the white pot with the double walls. When I was using it the other day I was reflecting on how good it is and t...

New Mattress Suggestions?

Well, to set this up the wife and I have a low-end hard mattress that we've been content with the last ten years. We bought a memory foam topper for it a year or so after buying it to provide a little softness. The mattress is hard by preference because I didn't like the pillow-top mattress we had b...

Re: Spam?

Same here, haven't had it in decades. I liked it though.

We didn't eat it growing up but I bought it as a bachelor.

I'll have to give it a whirl soon again, thanks to this post. I'l try it on the children just to see their reaction.

Stay tuned.

Re: The Boxes of Shame - where does this stuff come from?

Gary, that made me laugh out loud! Yes, I've done it but at the time I reasoned to my wife the next day that it was on sale and I've always wanted it and it WILL see good use. The Mrs. was not pleased. It was a Swaine, Adeny, and Brigg umbrella on sale for 50% off on the J. Peterman website. I had a...

Re: "That Lather"

I am very appreciative of all the replies. I admit I am out of the loop on the newer stuff that may be as excellent still as that of the old Houses. I haven't bought anything new in years. The Taylor's supply I have is old formula and makes "that Lather" in spades so I am content in that aspect, I g...

"That Lather"

I'm going to take you all back a bit here to about a decade or so ago. This is pre-Crack of Doom. In those days excellent tallow based soaps were still available. All the rage on the various forums was their beginning reformulation. In those days many of us had correspondence with Trumper's and the ...

Re: BBQ Grills and more specifically, Kamados

Great thread! Thanks to all for the input. Always interested to learn new ways to BBQ. I have a standard Weber kettle and it does OK for our seven member family. I haven't done anything long cooking on it though and have always wondered about other methods - for Summer and all. One day I'll step up,...
