I may invest in a Merkur HD and some good blades and give it a shot for a month

I highly recommend that you go to the trading forum and try buy yourself a gillette superspeed. You can also try ebay. The gillette is a lot more forgiving than the merkur is.

Its too bad that they don't make these anymore. I say this because it would be great for someone new to *real* shaving to sta...

when you can use cheap denatured alcohol? ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I do not own any of that stuff and in a few hours I want to try - according to rumour - one of the nicest razors ever made. It has been boiled (it looked very clean on arrival), loaded with a Merkur blade and is ready for action!...

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

It is in a pot right now coming to the boil, and I have a ton of whiskey to keep me company over the holiday weekend. If I dip it in that, does that count?

Clive

P.S. its very good whiskey too!

I got one in the mail today too . I don't have all of Ben's cleaning ingredients so I'm just going to boil and do the best clean I can with old toothbrush and soap. What's a few germs between friends anyway?

When I first started shaving I found the diagrams at the bottom of the linked page to be very useful. Give it a whirl, it worked very well for me.

Doug The brush is grand. Thanks for asking. Its almost the same size as my Floris so no learning curve there. The bristles are nice and firm and it lathered up like a champ. And, and not one single lost hair! I can't imagine needing anything else. Note to Richard: SMF 2007, I know, but besides that ...
