Then there's that Vulfix soap that that chap reported on recently, which sounded as if it had a similiar scent also, although it didn't sound like it lathered quite as well as the Truefitt's or the O&G. Interesting little buggers, these English scuttle soaps. Regards, Gordon As "that chap" that rec...

Yup, Gordon, that was me. There is probably some overlap between the sites, for a variety of reasons. I do have a bit of a fragrance addiction, although I do NOT own all of the vetivers mentioned (but have sampled them). Hope you liked the review, which I'm sure was favorable (it's been some time si...

I'd say Floris, Guerlain, Creed (the 1948 version), Puig and the now re-formulated (back to original) Carven are all good choices. If you want something a little different, Annick Goutal's version, with "Burmese" spices and something that smells of sea salt, has its fans. Etro, Santa Maria Novella a...

One of my favorite shave soaps, along with T&H and Floris. Haven't tried Trumper, Harris or Mitchell's, so I can't compare it to those, but the scent is great (I've used the A/S splash for years) and the lather top notch. It may be the best value in top quality shave soaps on the market.

Howard, I had some recently as well, and it is still quite nice, but it's not the same as the original. I wore the Dunhill for Men in the late '60s, and while what is still sold is similiar, it is not as nice nor as high quality. I note that now it's made in Holland, for some reason, rather then in...

That Vulfix brush works best with creams, IMO. Given that you will be limited to one item, why not make it your finest cream, i.e., the Trumper's Sandalwood.

Richard,

I've never worn the cologne, but the aftershave is quite strongly scented and lasts well. I have a preference for stronger scents and the aftershave is plenty powerful enough for me. Very reasonably priced, too.

Gordon, As a newbie to this site, I hate to disagree, but the second CM brush (the large one) from what I recall is made in Italy. It IS quite large, though it seems well made. The first one, correctly identified as a rebadge(re)d Vulfix #662, is a super. At $85, it is more expensive than the price ...

Gordon, I checked the packaging for the Gillette blades and the Scandanavian capitals and London are mentioned. It's identical packaging to the blades that had been brought back from England by a cousin. So I guess Gillette sells these in Greece as well, though I understand that they are not easy to...

Gordon, Feedback on the Vulfix soap: By way of background, my buddy uses a hollow handled gold comb-toothed Gillette, I believe it is a Tech, with what appears to be a frightening amount of blade exposure, loaded with American Personnas as his daily shaver. He has complained that the 1960s slim hand...

My experience with Vulfix was identical as well. VERY quick to make things right with their customers. My #377 was shedding bristles quite frequently, and they replaced it promptly.

IMO, Dunhill hasn't produced a good scent since Edition came out in the mid-80s (i.e., before Dunhill was purchased by P & G). The original Dunhill EDC is a classic, but has become increasingly hard to find. It is a warm masculine floral that is exceedingly gentlemanly. Worth seeking out.

Gordon, Thanks for your response. The soap tablet is for the larger pewter bowl, and is the 99 or 100g size. It has a citrussy scent, not unlike the T&H soap I have used. I have no experience with Taylor soaps, only their creams. And yes, that Floris soap is pricey, though the two tablets I picked u...

Vulfix soap?

Gentlemen, Has anyone tried the "Vulfix" soap? I am giving one of my buddies, a dedicated wetshaver, the large pewter Vulfix shave bowl for Christmas and was wondering how good the included soap tablet is, and whether or not I should replace it with a tablet from another manufacturer. It appears to ...

4711 to be acquired by Maurer and Wirtz

For fans of 4711, good news: the 4711 brand (but not the factory in Cologne) are being acquired by Maurer and Wirtz, the German purveyor of Tabac, so production of this classic scent will continue.

As you can see, it's all quite personal. I use a bowl because my face doesn't like a lot of brush work on it. I think for consistency, using a bowl is easier as well, so those starting off should probably at least consider using one.

Starbuck, This was touched upon briefly, but one thing that I believe will help you enormously is to SHAVE EVERY DAY. You are obviously suffering from in-grown hairs on Mondays, because you haven't shaved during the weekend and your beard is long, causing you to get a closer shave than normal on tha...
