Re: Rolling My Own

It is good to be back at SMF, and it's a bid odd to realize that the soapmaking thing happened about 5 years into my wetshaving journey, which in turn was a full 5 years ago. The last half-decade has flown by. The feeling is just the same when you realise you are looking back over multiple decades....

Re: Worst scent ever

Ah, a 'scrubber'. AKA a slapper, or a slag in UK slang. What it might mean in the US I don't know, but I'm probably letting my mind wander where it ought not to go.

Re: Rescuing my GFT Eucris

Just be sure to leave a tap in the kitchen with unsoftened water, since soft water tastes terrible to those used to the hard stuff. The Eucris soap is from a younger generation than my other Trumper soaps, and it surely shows in the performance. It's sad to think they are probably all like that now....

Re: "That Lather"

I have old formulation creams and tallow soaps from the big names from that era. Chris is absolutely right: they outshine the palm oil crap and don't come with a free, but dead, orang utan. I don't suppose Brexit will mean the reversal of the EU directives that have destroyed some of our favourites,...

Re: chin - problem with grain direction

Ingrowing hairs are generally caused by shaving too close to the skin, and having the tip of the hair retract just below skin level. If it doesn't exit the follicle correctly it can coil up inside the follicle. It might feel easier to shave with a DE as you don't have to press and the sharp blade wi...

Or you could simply hone that straight until it gives you the same degree of bliss you experience elsewhere. Many roads to Rome, and all that.

Re: chronic pain relief

Vince has asked me to close this thread as he sees the potential issues in promoting narcotics, even if naturally sourced, and even if they are still legal in some jurisdictions. Let's do that voluntarily rather than having it enforced.

I will ask Vince to weigh in, as I don't want SMF exposed to risk. You may not see that as an issue, but it is the only issue that matters on this site.

I've just tried Montreal, California, US Midwest and Melbourne AU as purported VPN origins, and had no problems.

Re: chronic pain relief

I'm no friend of "Big Pharma" when they try to seduce me into unwise or unnecessary prescribing. Indeed I used to run a website devoted to the shenanigans of drug reps. I remember scanning one of those free notepads they would hand out. This one was for Frosst 222's (codeine and ASA): http://drmoss....

Three Cheese and Spinach Cannelloni

Or manicotti - I've wanted to make this dish since watching The Sopranos! It is ridiculously simple, requires no skill or measurements and appears to be capable of making a priest break his vow of celibacy. You need: Basic Italian tomato sauce. I make my own from a surplus of tomatoes and can it, bu...

Re: General by Colonial - one year already and not looking back

Well I just found it and tried it. You have to be careful to align the blade and to place it so it protrudes the same amount from the jaws on each side. It will not lift up enough to flip over if the control lever is set to the hardest pressure, but from about halfway between the firmest stropping a...

Re: General by Colonial - one year already and not looking back

I'm finding the Feather Pro blades last a very long time - my current one has been in the razor for a couple of months (!) and it has been used about half that time, as I have to use my straights too. Just for fun today, I took out the blade, placed it in an Artists Club and stropped it on linen and...

Re: chronic pain relief

Again, I don't want to spoil things (or 'piss on your parade'), but opiates are opiates. Sure some are natural (opium, papaveretum, codeine) and some are synthetic modifications of those molecules (demerol, heroin, hydrocodone) but they all have the same effects to a greater or lesser degree (techni...
