Re: My adventure with a Muhle R41

According to The Sharpologist, "The top plate on the head has been widened to 20.2mm from 18.8mm, decreasing blade exposure." It was easy to measure the difference on the two heads I have. It would have been scary if my first R41 head had been as wide as the 2013 head I just got!

Re: Do You Have a Favorite Vintage Razor?

I have an interesting old Ever-Ready lather catcher with a tiny, curvaceous black-painted wood handle. I've used it with recent Gem blades, and I think it was originally made to take a wedge blade, though I'm not sure. (That's something I'm not clear on with SE razors - (1) Could you use a disposabl...

Re: Shaving with a Schick Type D Injector and other early injectors

I finally installed a fresh blade into this thing... [If you saw my razor drawer, with all the live razors holding blades with some shaves left in them, you'd know why it takes a while to try something new.]

Re: My adventure with a Muhle R41

I just bought the R41 as part of a razor lot, so I don't know the exact age. It looks like new. As far as selling, we can PM each other. I don't know what the going price is for a used one until I look at other sales. I'd be willing to sell the whole razor and only keep the less aggressive open comb...

Re: My adventure with a Muhle R41

I don't think there's any legal requirement to sterilize a used razor before shipping it. Certainly I've bought my share of old razors encrusted with organic matter, and spent a lot of time cleaning them. There's very little, if anything, that will grow on clean bare (non-rusty) metal, and a good sc...

Re: Focus R48 Dynamic SE Razor

I just bent my first DE blade. I can see just a little bend at each extreme end. I suppose you could put a tiny bend into a pre-broken blade, too, if it helps make the blade fit better. I don't like handling bare DE blades; too much risk of cutting myself with a false move.

Re: Focus R48 Dynamic SE Razor

The razor is made to take the little bend in the half-blade from bending by hand, but it's good to know you can use half-blades available commercially. I don't want 100 half-blades, though, so I'll try bending a re-wrapped worn blade to see what it's like.

Re: How did you discover wetshaving?

I always used older razors, inherited from my father and grandfather - mostly Gillettes, and one Schick. (My dad tended to get whatever razor was current, which meant a Tech, a Super Speed, and a couple of different adjustables. My grandfather had a 50's or 60's Eversharp Schick injector with a shor...

Re: The Razor That Haunts Me

I'm pretty sure the Krona came first. They could have overlapped. And as far as having a standard name, the "Schick Platinum" seems to be it. It's just that hardly anyone in the USA knows about it. I just found one for about half the price of the previous one I saw: https://www.etsy.com/listing/6040...

Re: The Razor That Haunts Me

This $60 one is still for sale: https://www.ebay.com/itm/122969536561 I think that not only is it quite rare, but it's also quite obscure. Otherwise, it would either be selling for more or would have sold already. Maybe part of it is that there isn't a standard name for it. If I were selling it, I w...

There's probably some discussion of this buried in the "Razors and Blades" forum.

After a quick search, I found someone who had used very thin needle nose pliers.

Re: My adventure with a Muhle R41

If you have the 2011 version, it's worth some money. If you have the 2013 version, that's what I use. I use Astra SP blades. I get a very close shave and a very smooth shave all the time. Steve Does it make a lot of difference if I sell the whole razor or just the head? Have you seen any of these b...

Re: Razors that need refurbishing

Paul and Gary, if the razor is a 1957 or before, it is more easily disassembled, provided you have the appropriate tool to unscrew the mechanism from below. Murray, what's that tool called, and can you get it at a hardware store? I imagine it being similar to a screwdriver, but with two small rods ...

Schick Tracer Razor - $18, including shipping ($14 without blades)

I knew the Schick Tracer, and the compatible FX Diamond razor, were discontinued. What I didn't know last month was that they're still in demand. The blades are expensive on eBay, usually more costly than Fusion blades. I just got a supply of the razors, each packaged with 2 blades, made in 1990 in ...

Re: Focus R48 Dynamic SE Razor

That's why I prefer buying used razors (rather than new) in good shape - they're usually easy to resell for about what I paid for them. There's not just RAD - Razor Acquisition Disorder. There's also RDR - Razor Divestment Regret. I bought a used Merkur Progress quite a few years ago, then sold it a...

Re: My adventure with a Muhle R41

That's good to know about Version 1. I'm not particularly attached to it. :D I got the Version 2 head in the mail a couple of days ago, and it was a lot less dangerous, though still the second-most dangerous open comb razor I've tried. Unlike my adventure with Version 1, I felt safe using it everywh...

Re: Razors that need refurbishing

These are the bad razors I was talking about. The photo is actually much larger and will show more detail if you do a "View Image." Left to Right: 1) Y3 Super Speed - head out of alignment or not being pulled all the way into place 2) B4 Super Adjustable (plastic adjuster) - TTO/adjuster mechanism o...
