Re: The “Razor and Blades” Business Model

Chris, that’s why I ended up buying a b&w laser printer instead of yet another inkjet. I buy a new toner cartridge every 18 months or so for about £5 off Amazon which prints around 3000 A4 pages. The printer (a Brother) itself is at least 5 years old now and was cheap enough, but is still going ...

Re: General by Colonial - one year already and not looking b

Interesting looking razor Gary and very minimalist- if Apple made razors, this would be it... My initial reaction is that it’s design for design’s sake - I can’t see what ‘problem’ it solves over a regular DE razor. You mention the longevity of the blades. Are they expensive in comparison to DE blad...

The “Razor and Blades” Business Model

Interesting article about the history of Gillette’s DE razor and how the business model he created still stands to this day:

Re: The Pet Showcase

Gary, I agree that some pet-owners become rather overly attached to their furry friend. Our own dog is so completely domesticated, I do wonder from time to time how on Earth he would survive without us (or another human being) providing for his every need. I don’t think I’ll be rushing to Trumper’s ...

Re: Soccer/Futbol

Gary, it’s a unique peculiarity of the English Premier League where a draw can sometimes be celebrated as if it were win. The British do, after all, love nothing more than an under-dog.

Re: Soccer/Futbol

The celebration was probably because they didn’t end up losing to Manchester United. Simple as that, I’d imagine.

It’s a game I’ve never truly understood the mass appeal of, partly for the reasons you mentioned, Gary. I prefer Rugby (Union) these days.

Re: pots and pans

Brian, Circulon is definitely a brand rather than just a technology. Our local Costco has had a set in there for years that I’ve been meaning to pick up as a second, lighter-weight pan set.

Re: pots and pans

We’ve used cast-iron almost exclusively for nearly 10 years, Le Creuset to be specific. They hold heat very well, are built like tanks and are well worth the investment.

I can also say with experience and confidence that I very rarely have an issue with food sticking to them.

Re: Products/Gear Combinations

I agree Basil - I’ve never viewed shaving soaps or creams to be something that is somehow limited or in short supply...except the old vintage Coate’s of course. For many years now I have lathered soaps on the bowl itself. Once the brush is well loaded I then build the lather either in my hand or on ...

Re: For Marmite lovers only

Chris, I had forgotten all about Marmite flavoured Twiglets. They seem to have fallen out of favour as a snack here, and I only seem to come across them now at Christmas-time. As you said, they’re a perfect accompaniment to a G&T. Other ‘acquired tastes’ worth sampling are Vegemite and Gentleman...

Brutus, yes I find it to be quite readily available in their Carrerfour hyper-markets.

Actually there is usually quite a nice selection of traditional shaving products - various shaving creams, soaps, DE blades etc.

Toast with salted butter and Marmite, cut in to 'soldiers' with soft boiled eggs.

I didn't think Marmite and egg would go, but it's now one of my favourites.

Re: Tabac inspired

I recently finished a small 30ml bottle of Tabac aftershave which I thoroughly enjoyed wearing. Quite "old fashioned" as described above, but very classic and suitable for most occasions I found. Here in the UK it's not terribly easy to find - I actually bought my bottle from a hyper-marke...

FS: Simpson Tulip 2 - $55 - REDUCED

I would like to offer for sale a very well loved and used Tulip 2 in Super Badger. The brush is around 7 years old and was purchased from Pasteur's of New York. The brush handle is in a good condition but the knot has lost quite a lot of density, with shorter hairs in the centre. The brush actually ...

Re: Watches, watches, watches (caution: modem burner)

Has anyone been tempted by Apple Watch? I am an avid and devoted Apple user but this is one product I haven't yet gone for. I just appreciate a quality, traditional timepiece too much. I also don't wear any other jewellery except for my watch and/or cuff links so appreciate it on this level also. Th...
