I really like the Simpson Special - I use mine when travelling as it fits perfectly into one of the Simpson travel tubes. A great brush for someone just starting out and not too pricey either.
I would echo Brian's comments - don't be shy with the amount of soap you load on the brush.

Re: Don't leave home without it....
No Gareth, I suspect it's that they flew under the radar -- literally. If the person managing the console didn't know what they were looking at, they likely will simply ignore it. Oddly enough, my Bose SoundDock Mini and my usb speaker bar often got hauled out to be looked at by clearance staff whe...

Re: Is SMF losing its vigour?
We may have said nearly all that we know, but few bother to go back and read ancient posts ( pace , Gary), so sometimes it must be said again. We have become a company of friends, who may not need or want to discuss the minutiae of shaving to the exclusion of all else, but we still like to keep con...

Re: Watches, watches, watches (caution: modem burner)
A question for the watch fans. Is losing approx. 20 seconds per day a normal occurrence with an automatic? Clive, in my opinion, no, this isn't normal. 20 seconds a week ? maybe.... I had a Datejust like this not long ago and in the end I sent it for servicing. I've since replaced it with a Submari...

For what most of them cost, I do the same as others have done and throw them when they start to get that messy.

Re: Current state of hard soaps
Dan, this is the main reason why I stopped using soaps almost entirely several years back - you just couldn't rely on the replacement puck being up to scratch. As I start to get back into this again, I will watch this thread with interest. I'm planning to stop by Trumper's and Harris' next month whe...

Re: What bath soap are you using right now?
We are toying with another trip this fall, and yes, Costco will be on the itinerary for some more IL. Can't beat that stuff. Especially at Costco box prices. Wendell, I too like Imperial Lather but my biggest annoyance is the soap scum it leaves in the bath/shower - it always seems much worse than ...

It would be nice to see some of these on the shelves in the UK! Our 'off the rack' selection is very poor here.

Re: Don't leave home without it....
Now that I am no longer traveling for work, my stash of Bic sensitives hasn't gone down at all. My issue has always been flying with DE blades when I was traveling with one bag that I would take onto the plane myself. TSA and CATSA are not in favour. Not at all .... I have some personal experience....

Don't leave home without it....
Recently my traveling has steadily increased and so I'm away from home more often. I rarely forget to pack something but in the past 7 days I have twice forgotten to pack my DE razor. The result has invariably been blue air upon realisation and then a quick dash to a pharmacy/supermarket to pick som...

Re: Do you wash new blades?
Hi Arief, welcome to SMF.
I never wash the blade myself, though I do somewhat instinctively place the head of the razor in warm water anyway to warm it through. Any oil on the surface won't be harmful to you.

Seen it - all I will say is it is left very open-ended so I'm not assuming this is really it.

Buying a 'pre-honed' straight razor
Can anyone advise or recommend good places to buy 'pre-honed' straight razors, new or old (I'm UK based if it matters).
Just been doing some reading of Chris' fantastic guide and fancy a new challenge.
