Re: Starting over with an open blade

Well, after the last three shaves, I realized the blade probably needed touching up. For most guys, 9-10 shaves might not be enough to rough up the edge of the blade to any degree, but I have not mastered technique, so I'm doubtless doing more damage than I'd need to. Anyway, I pasted a paddle strop...

Re: Nancy Boy products

Gary, we're in the same boat, but I think I'm going to hold off. I have only 2 creams I'm keeping in the den: Fraser's and Palmolive with menthol. If I start adding creams back to the mix, where does it end? I love Nancy Boy creams and was fond of the aftershave gel when I used it, too. Their ...

I think in my quest to reduce I am ready to declare that the EJ has retained its place as the best brush in my den and my only synthetic. The Synbad feels less like I expect a brush to feel, even if it works really well.

Re: Re-batching Shaving Soap

Rebatching is a pain but it sounds like you did well. The thing about a soap that's aged awhlile - a bar soap at least - is that it's quite mild on the skin, and it seems the pH does fall slightly over time. My shave soaps that are six years old are all very nice to use, maybe better on the skin tha...

Re: Amazing NBA finals game

A bit of a conundrum for me. I dislike the Warriors and in particular whiny Durant, but after the way Kawhi left the Spurs, I have a hard time rooting for him. Guess I'll treat it like I do regular season games and just hope to see good basketball.

Re: English Fern tallow soap by Penhaligon's

The scent is incredible. The soap...is one I never got to try. I hope you enjoy the shaves, Gary.

I did get to try tallowate Blenheim, and I foolishly sold it. Ugh. Another favorite scent, and one I prefer in a soap vs. an all-day fragrance.

Re: Starting over with an open blade

Well, it does seem relatively easy this time around. I wonder if it's the 2000 shaves I've had since I tried a straight last that have given me close familiarity with the peculiarities of my facial angles and beard growth, or if it's as simple as being confident and adjusting the angle. I think prev...

Re: What is it about brushes?

The mixed APShaveCo brush is out for me. The prickle is no different five lathers in than on day one. Comvined with it beimg a bit unwieldy, I'm not gonna mess with it. Here it is side by side with a 24mm Shavemac 2-band.

Chris, my hope is that Gordon is enjoying time with his second wife and pursuing some interest that takes him away from the web - parasailing or backpacking the Andes or something.

Re: What is it about brushes?

Bryan, I've tried to refrain from commenting until it's had time to break in more, but I'm not sold on the APShaveCo. It has more scritch than the Semogue Mistura out of the box, and its bloom is massive. It feels like a 30mm brush on the face, despite being a 24mm knot. The scritch may improve, but...

Re: What is it about brushes?

Buzz, Plisson is beyond my price range, although I certainly understand its appeal. But I have been sampling through a bunch of potential keepers lately, and it does seem I may be close to being a non-collector (over 3 brushes makes one a collector as I recall). I am looking at keeping one synthetic...

Re: Starting over with an open blade

Chris, love that mantra. I may evolve toward a one pass shave, but I enjoy lathering on my face, so I'd have to at least lather a second time for touchups. Today was two passes and light touch up on the chin. No bloodletting or irritation. Also the closest straight shave yet. Indistinguishable...

Re: Starting over with an open blade

Chris, I have been thinking about your comment this morning. Indeed, a rushed shave, even with good kit, isn't enjoyable. I suppose if I'm going to take time honing and stropping, I ought to take my time shaving. Perhaps 20 minutes is an appropriate amount of time. I have been trying to excise effic...

Re: Starting over with an open blade

Another day with no burn, no nicks, no weepers. Wish I could say no whiskers left on face, but that will come. Plenty close. My quietest shave yet, which I think is a good thing: no scraping. 23 minutes from startng to strop through putting everything away. I like taking my time but would love to be...
