This is a little nugget from a contributor to a UK discussion forum I check out from time to time - money saving expert - which confirms what I've long thought that the reason the old Wilkinson - and probably Gillette - blades were so much better was because they used a rather higher grade of stainl...

Wilkinson Sword were still making de blades in their Cramlington, Northumberland UK factory in 1997. They announced they were closing the factory and moving production to Germany in October 1998, but the final closure wasn't scheduled until June 2000. Here's the BBC news link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/...

I've got one of these razors in a box along with its original packaging and it was marketed as a 'super slimtwist'. It shaves very nicely even though it doesn't feel quite as well made as the earlier generation of razors. The original slimtwist had a different kind of plastic handle in white, cream ...

The blades in these wrappers are usually excellent, being made in Cramlington, Northumberland UK when the factory was producing top quality razor blades but I'm also surprised that they seem to be in their cellophane wrappers but without the cards in the front of the pack. These are usually gold and...

Personally I would never use them on my face, but as a light cologne they are perfect. The Marlborough aside(the scent makes me hurl), their "Sandalwood" aftershave works as a very nice cologne with quite the longevity. Jani, the aftershaves from Taylor's and DH Harris are formulated quite differen...

And yet the diminishing availability of quality blades would suggest that the demand isn't there, at least in terms of people actually using them. Either that or the big corporations are trying to squeeze us down the road of cartridges. So we have less of the "quality" old school razors around and ...

I've got a stash of 268 Swedes. If I can get 34 shaves out of every one that's errh (268*34=9112) a lot of shaves! 25 years worth! :)

indeed i shall. tomorrow also begins a new experiment: shaving with octagon soap :P Dave, the question is how long will we have to wait before we know if it makes a difference or not? Didn't you make a Swede last pretty much for ever just by hand stropping it? Btw have you stopped using that poor c...

You make some good points but are we sure that our blades are immune to degradation from the air and humidity? An update of the experiments on more modern blades would be interesting I think. I have experienced rust in my razor and on a blade in the past when I have left a damp blade in it. As a ro...

interesting, particularly the comments re: hand stropping DE blades. seems like it could be counter-productive if you don't get the blade angle absolutely spot on and by the sounds of it you will likely get the angle wrong. I don't think that's what the article actually says. :) The warnings about ...

If my 25 years shaving has taught me anything about blades it is that your first shave with any blade can not be conducted like the 3rd, or 5th or 7th. +1 A few years more than that for me, but same thing. Back in the olden golden days of the 60's and 70's you had to take a little more care with a ...

I just emailed him actually ! Are they good razors in your opinion and how do they shave ? It looks like they were designed to take the barrel hole blade and the DE blades we are used to have the same holes that would fit the razor head ! I bought a Gillette razor off Nigel not a wardonia but he to...

I've got a few packs and I've shaved with a few blades and for me they shave just like they look which is like a Swede without being a Swede - nearly as sharp, nearly as smooth, nearly as long lasting: a good blade.

I just bought a really great razor from Nigel Sharpe who runs the wardonia razors web site referenced above. They're his thing. His email address is on the home page and he seems a really neat guy and for sure he'd tell you if those old wardonia razors take standard blades. My guess is they do.

Vinny I'd be a bit careful with these. Are the packs sealed? I think this is what has stopped me buying them all. I've bought 10 (blades) so far for £1.50 so am waiting for those to turn up before making a decision. As yet I have not seen a single picture of all the packs together - or of any seale...

Vinny I'd be a bit careful with these. Are the packs sealed? These are basically very good blades. I've got a few hundred of them bought from different surces including a hundred or more in sealed packs on the original card backs. but these look like some blades I bought off ebay recently. The packs...

And, thus, I'm making a presumption that the Blue and White cardboard (made in Russia, even) box and labelled "Gillette Platinum" are just the most current version of "swedes". Am I sort of accurate in making this presumption? I'm particularly interested in Gordon's opinion, because I know Gordon's...
