John, I agree with Andrew on two points - consider skipping the aftershave and get one with aloe as an ingredient if you do use one. I am currently not using an aftershave because I don't really need it. Like you, I have oily skin. My double edge razor technique has evolved to a point where irritati...

I like the cream/soap to have some noticeable scent, but not be overpowering. Gents, I think Gordon summed it up well for me with the above statement. Like Murray, I seem to be having allergies to some of the strongly scented soaps and creams. Also, the coloring in some products can cause burning t...

Light or Strong Scent?

My preference is for lighter scents. I am much more likely to use a lighter floral scented product for a long time than a product with a strongly perfumed scent. Lighter scented products just seem more compatible with my skin and nose. My favorite scent is from a fresh tube of Tom's of Maine Calendu...

I also have learned to get a consistently close and comfortable shave using Williams Mug Shaving Soap. My only complaint with Williams is that it doesn't rinse off quickly and requires a bit of effort to completely remove it from your face. I still use it regularly.

Jeff,

Just curious, but can you get the same results without adding the glycerin?

You could buy a double edge razor at a local Art of Shaving store if you have one but you will pay a stiff premium for the privilege.

Chris, I need to mention one last tidbit. Many fellows on SMF and B&B complain about Tom's of Maine Shave Cream being hard to push out of the tube. This happens when the shave cream sits on the shelf a long time prior to purchase. I have not had this experience but I know that my last tube of calend...

Chris, You might try the Tom's of Maine Calendula or Mint Shave Creams. Tom's of Maine is the only all natural vendor I have found to date. The Tom's of Maine website shows the ingredients - no parabens, chelating agents, artificial colors, or fragrance other than essential oils. The calendula is my...

Robert, Nothing may be your best bet. I use Thayer's Lemon Witch Hazel for my one and only daily aftershave. The scent is natural and does not linger, the 10% alcohol has never caused me any irritation, and the aloe vera in the witch hazel provides a nice touch of moisture. There are no preservative...

Gordon, Well, perhaps you are right. Then again, I think that I had done exemplary research having read all past SMF posts on razors possibly at least twice - especially those posted by Joe Lerch on double edge razor technique which I am sure I read more than twice before acquiring my first three do...

It is interesting that this subject is not addressed formally very much in...

DE Razor Short versus Long Strokes

My double edge razor technique was predominantly developed studying Joe Lerch's posts on this subject which emphasized effective preparation, blade angle control, and a light touch. I evolved a technique beginning in February 2006 which uses three basic passes between lathering - long vertically dow...

Gents,

Thank you for the inputs. I have called up this one thread more than any other feature on SMF to review ingredient labels in an attempt to verify what agrees with my skin.

Moderators, can we please sticky this one?

Again, thank you all.

Why not buy it new? Classic shaving or QEDUSA.com both have it and the latter has a good price. You may likely own it a very long time.....

Regardless of how your request turns out, stick with your instincts on trying the HD. It is a great razor and there is a reason so many have liked using it.
